Fans of 28 Years Later are concerned the planned third movie has been cancelled, and the studio hasn’t said anything to reassure them. Surprisingly, a recent official statement actually made the rumors worse.
When 28 Years Later was originally announced, the creators—director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland—shared plans for a three-part series, with the first two films intended to be shot consecutively.
Daniel Boyle later explained that Sony hadn’t officially approved a third film when they greenlit the first two; it would only be made if it proved financially viable. The announcement of the third film followed very positive reactions from fan screenings of The Bone Temple.

After the second movie didn’t do as well as hoped in theaters, rumors began that Sony might be losing interest in making a third film.
Although some industry publications like World of Reel are reporting information from unnamed sources, success in Hollywood ultimately comes down to box office numbers. The Bone Temple earned just $57.6 million worldwide, significantly less than the $151.3 million made by the previous film, despite both having roughly the same $60 million budget.

Adding to the excitement, the official social media account for the franchise announced the digital release of The Bone Temple in the US, calling it “the ending you’ve waited 28 years for.”
The use of the word “ending” has led fans to believe the third movie has either been secretly cancelled or is definitely happening.
Some people disagree with this idea, suggesting the ‘ending fans have waited 28 years for’ simply refers to Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, finally appearing in the last scene. However, it’s worth noting that Jim hasn’t been seen since the original film came out 24 years ago, not 28.

It’s concerning that we haven’t heard any news about the third film from Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, Sony, or anyone involved, especially with rumors circulating that it’s been cancelled. Adding to the worry, The Bone Temple didn’t perform as well in theaters as 28 Years Later.
Will the success of The Bone Temple online and Jim’s return to the screen be enough to revitalize the movie series?
Digital Spy rated The Bone Temple four stars, praising it as a bold and successful sequel. They noted that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple both works as a great standalone film and effectively builds anticipation for the series’ conclusion.
Fans in the UK will soon be able to digitally purchase or rent 28 Years Later, and both 28 Years Later and 28 Days Later are currently available to stream with a Sky/NOW Cinema membership.
