The films were originally intended to be a series of three, but questions arose about whether the third movie would actually be made after reports surfaced that it had been canceled. Director Danny Boyle has clarified that the project hasn’t been completely abandoned, but it’s currently on hold and its future isn’t certain.
Danny Boyle, the director of the original 28 Days Later, also directed 28 Years Later. Nia DaCosta then directed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, with Alex Garland writing the scripts for both films. Although a third movie was planned, it’s currently on hold. Boyle recently told JoBlo that they simply didn’t have enough time to film it. However, production could potentially begin in 2027.
The Third Film Might Start Shooting in 2027
Boyle explained they didn’t have enough time to film this year. The location in Britain only allows filming during specific seasons, and they simply ran out of time. They’re hoping to film next year, and Alex Garland has already written a great script for the project.
The 2025 film 28 Years Later earned over $151 million globally on a $60 million budget and received generally positive reviews. A sequel to 28 Days Later, the movie follows Spike, a young boy played by Alfie Williams, as he journeys with his sick mother (Jodie Comer) to find medical help in a post-apocalyptic world. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Chi-Lewis Parry also appear in the film.
The Bone Temple Bombed in Theaters
I was really excited for the newest installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and it definitely dug deeper into the story of Jimmy Crystal’s creepy cult, showing how Spike gets pulled into it all. Critics loved it – it actually scored a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed film in the whole series! It’s a shame, though, because despite the positive buzz, it didn’t do well at the box office. It only made $58.5 million worldwide, when it cost $63 million to make, so it was considered a flop.
After the second movie didn’t do as well as hoped, people began to worry that the third film wouldn’t happen. However, in December, reports indicated that Sony was still planning to make 28 Years Later 3. The reports also suggested Alex Garland would write the script and that the original star would reprise his role, following his appearance in The Bone Temple. Sony has not officially confirmed these details, though.
As of now, there’s no official release date for 28 Years Later 3.
