Liz and Jeff Astrof, the creators of “Stumble,” were as captivated by the cheerleaders of Navarro College as many Americans were. They followed the team and their demanding coach, Monica Aldama, in the hit two-season series that debuted in 2020. The show challenged common perceptions of cheerleading, revealing it to be a demanding sport requiring incredible athleticism, fierce competition, and featuring a diverse group of athletes – both men and women – from all walks of life.

According to the report, which cited sources who wished to remain anonymous, the allegations did not involve any form of sexual misconduct. The report has sparked significant online conversation, particularly with the release of the fifth season of Stranger Things – set to premiere on Netflix on November 26th – just around the corner.

Jenn Lyon portrays cheerleading coach Courteney Potter, and it’s clear she studied Monica Aldama from the docuseries “Cheer.” Lyon has imitated Aldama’s mannerisms and much of her personality. Courteney coaches at the fictional Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College in Wichita Flats, Texas – a town inspired by Corsicana, where “Cheer” takes place – and her team has a history of winning, as evidenced by the many trophies on display. The story begins with Courteney being fired after a lighthearted video surfaces of her celebrating with the team – she’s seen drinking champagne and playfully awarding a prize for “best booty.” She’s then forced to tell her squad, “I have been asked to be fired.”

It’s disappointing because the film initially shows real promise. When we first meet Christy, a tough, athletic, and openly gay high schooler who uses boxing to build her confidence, the script – written by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd – expertly highlights the hidden aspects of these stories. It focuses on the intensity and energy of a talented boxer, the pressures of being different in a male-dominated sport, and how this ultimately leads Christy to hide a part of who she is.
