At first, I considered the ability to write my own content as more of a luxury, but soon realized it would become essential. Unlike being assigned specific cast members, if no one wrote for you, it was up to you to ensure your presence on the show. This situation fostered both pressure and competition that were characteristic of the show. I often describe it as, “A show where you’ve already landed a spot, but still need to audition every week.

On my first evening, I attended a special 25th-anniversary performance, where I was ushered into a compact dressing room and encountered Dan Aykroyd, Lily Tomlin, and Elvis Costello for the first time – a moment that felt surreal. This was just one of several instances when I found myself questioning reality. I had the opportunity to meet my comedy heroes, watch live concerts from close range, and have Don Pardo announce my name every Saturday night – a long-cherished dream realized! Additionally, there was an undercurrent of excitement that came with being part of a live show, rushing to change between acts, and witnessing sets being shifted at breakneck speed.

I don my clown suit, complete with the big nose, and entertain with jokes in a humorous voice while maintaining my identity as Cecily – a character I portray – yet revealing that I myself had an abortion at age 23.

The bubble burst in less than two days, leaving me holed up in my studio apartment, which is situated uncomfortably near Port Authority. Even on a typical day, this location isn’t ideal for someone who knows New York City; during a pandemic, it’s even worse. Moreover, if you are familiar with both the city and me personally, I’m still disappointed that you didn’t warn me before I signed my lease.

At the closing of today’s broadcast, the host mentioned that she won’t appear on the morning program next week because of the midyear break. However, she assured us that she’ll be back shortly after that.
