10 Zelda Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off

Over the long history of The Legend of Zelda, countless stories have been told, often centering on the characters of Link, Zelda, and Ganon (or Ganondorf). While maybe not as widely recognized as Mario, Link and Zelda have become Nintendo icons, and their new games are eagerly anticipated by fans. The main Zelda games take place across different timelines and frequently feature unique themes and adventures.

The 40th anniversary of Zelda has been marked by several exciting announcements, and fans have been buzzing with rumors about potential new games and remakes. So far, no new spin-off games focusing on characters from Hyrule have been revealed, but there’s a lot of potential to create fantastic games around them. Hopefully, any future spin-offs will be even more successful than Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland.

Hestu, Makar, And The Koroks Deserve A Game

Their Lore, And A Lot Of Happy Chaos

Koroks are a bit divisive – some players love finding them, while others find them frustrating – but their backstory is really interesting. They started as a human-like race called the Kokiri, and after a big flood, they changed into their current form to help spread forests. The Great Deku Tree watches over them.

A game focused on Koroks could be a relaxing puzzle experience where you find them, just like in Breath of the Wild – a beloved part of that game for many players. Another idea would be an adventure game in the style of Pikmin, featuring Hestu and the Koroks solving mysteries. They could even create a *Just Dancestyle game with Hestu and Makar! These adorable forest spirits offer a huge range of possibilities for fun and creative games.

Happy Mask Salesman’s Adventures

Who IS This Creepy Salesman?

The Happy Mask Salesman is one of the most intriguing characters in The Legend of Zelda series. This traveling merchant has a very unpredictable personality, quickly changing from happy to intensely upset. He also sells a peculiar selection of items – only masks.

The Happy Mask Salesman shows up in a few games, but he’s best known from Majora’s Mask. The game begins with him traveling and searching for unique masks when he’s suddenly attacked by the Skull Kid, who steals the powerful Majora’s Mask from him.

This brief story not only kicks off the events of Majora’s Mask well, but it also suggests the Happy Mask Salesman actively finds his masks instead of just buying and selling them. It would be amazing to play a game where you control the Salesman and experience his travels collecting these special masks throughout Hyrule.

Groose As A Main Character

After All, He Wanted It To Be Called “The Legend Of Groose”

In The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Link is frequently picked on by Groose, a classmate at the Knight Academy. Groose is envious of Link’s friendship with Zelda and comes across as conceited and headstrong. However, despite his behavior towards Link, the game reveals that he’s actually a good person deep down.

Groose is a pretty silly character in Skyward Sword. He’s obsessed with renaming everything after himself – he wants to call the world “Grooseland” and even the game “The Legend of Groose,” which, honestly, could be a really interesting way to tell the story.

Rather than just updating Skyward Sword, Nintendo could create a spin-off game where players see the story through Groose’s eyes. A game called The Legend of Groose would be a fun way to revisit the story and might help us understand why Groose acted like a bully at the beginning.

Linkle Is A Perfect Character For A Spin-Off

Currently Only Seen In Hyrule Warriors

You might not know Linkle – she’s only been in Hyrule Warriors Legends, a side game from the Zelda series. Even so, I think she’s a really interesting character and deserves her own game!

Linkle lives in a small Hyrule village where she cares for Cuccos. From a young age, she’s believed she was destined to be a hero, especially after her grandmother gave her a special compass. When Hyrule Castle comes under attack, she puts on a green tunic, inspired by the legendary Link, and sets out to help defend it.

It’s still a mystery if she’s connected to Link, but she definitely stands out as a brave and capable hero – she’d be a blast to control in her own game! She’s hilariously bad with directions, even with a huge compass always visible, and often gets lost. But that just makes her more endearing, doesn’t it?

Rauru Could Provide An Adventure In Hyrule’s History

The First King Of Hyrule

The story of Hyrule is revealed gradually throughout the games, and it can sometimes become confusing due to different timelines. In Breath of the Wild and especially Tears of the Kingdom, we learn about Rauru, the first king of Hyrule, and see events from the past involving Princess Zelda and him.

This character is both clever and strong, wielding incredible magic and possessing a truly kind heart. Telling the story of the Kingdom of Hyrule through the perspective of its very first king is a brilliant way to reveal its history.

Midna And The Twilight Realm

So Many Possibilities In This Alternate World

Players of Zelda: Twilight Princess will remember Midna, the princess of the Twili people and ruler of the Twilight Realm. Though she spends most of the game appearing as a small imp, she’s actually a stunning and powerful princess in her own world. She’s a fan favorite character, and many players would love to see her return in future games, even though she only appeared in Twilight Princess once.

While the story of Twilight Princess focuses on Hyrule, there’s a lot more to explore about the Twilight Realm itself. What was Princess Zelda like before the mirror broke, and what happened in the Twilight Realm after the game’s events? This setting offers a chance for a Legend of Zelda game with a much grimmer and more intense tone than we usually see.

Hudson’s Construction Company

Puzzle Games To Build Up The Kingdom

Hudson started his career at Bolson Construction in Breath of the Wild, and later founded his own company, Hudson Construction, in Tears of the Kingdom. He’s a dedicated and reserved family man – he’s married with a daughter – and appears in both games. Having a character like Hudson and his established construction business makes a puzzle or building-focused spin-off game seem like a natural fit.

In Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll encounter some simple puzzles involving physics. You help an employee named Addison put up signs for Hudson’s Construction all over Hyrule.

Hyrule has seen a lot of destruction, leaving many towns and communities in need of repair. Imagine a game where you play as Hudson, rebuilding these familiar lands and managing the finances to do so – maybe even restoring Hyrule Castle! It could be a city-building game with puzzle elements.

Tetra’s Pirating Adventures

Sailing Hyrule’s Seas Looking For Loot To Plunder Could Be Fun!

One of my favorite Zelda games is The Wind Waker, and a big reason why is Tetra, the spunky pirate captain. Even before she meets Link, it’s clear she’s had a lot of exciting experiences, and the game eventually reveals who she really is.

Just like her mother before her, Tetra is a strong and admired pirate captain. Her crew readily follows her orders. When Link encounters Tetra in The Wind Waker, she’s sailing the Great Sea with her crew, hunting for a famous, lost treasure.

A new game starring Tetra and her crew – where they search for treasure, battle monsters, and live as pirates – would be a fresh direction for the Zelda series while still feeling true to the established world and story.

Impa’s Lore In The Zelda Universe Is Already So Deep

We Need A Game To Explore Her Life

Impa has been a consistent character throughout the entire Legend of Zelda series, appearing in almost every game since the very beginning in 1986. She’s played many different roles in Zelda’s life – sometimes as a protector, sometimes as a caretaker, and even as a wise oracle or an elderly woman, but she’s always been important.

It’s unclear if Impa is a single person appearing throughout the Zelda games, or multiple Impas helping Zelda across different timelines. Regardless, she’s a truly compelling character. She’s consistently portrayed as a talented fighter with deep understanding of Hyrule’s royal family and its history. Exploring Impa’s backstory – perhaps showing moments where she protected Zelda – would make for a fascinating story.

Beedle’s Adventures To Restock His Store

Surely He Has A Double Life

Beedle, the popular traveling merchant, is a well-known figure throughout Hyrule. He sells Link a variety of helpful goods, from fishing bait to items that increase health. He’s constantly traveling and often shares stories about where he found his wares.

It seems unlikely Beedle simply stumbled upon a heart container in the middle of the road. This hints he might be leading a secret double life, which would be a fantastic idea for a new game. Imagine a game where he’s collecting and selling items, similar to games like Moonlighter or Cuisineer! Given how much fans love Beedle in The Legend of Zelda, a game centered around him would be much more appealing than one about Tingle.
