Having great power doesn’t always make someone happy. Some powerful individuals feel alone because of their abilities, and others gain their strength through difficult experiences like trauma, loss, or personal sacrifice.
Surprisingly, many incredibly powerful characters are actually quite unhappy. Characters like Itachi Uchiha and Eren Yeager find that while their strength can overcome challenges, it doesn’t heal their inner pain or fix their personal struggles.
Ainz Ooal Gwon is Ruler Who Lost His Friends
Ainz Ooal Gwon is considered the most powerful being in the New World, and his followers see him as an all-knowing god capable of incredible destruction. However, the man behind this powerful figure, Momonga, is gone in a way – his former self and guildmates are lost, and he’s become detached, unable to feel sadness or longing for his past life.
In Overlord, Ainz feels isolated because his old friends are gone, leaving him without the normal relationships he once had. While his loyal followers, the Floor Guardians, think every action he takes is brilliant strategy, they don’t realize he’s actually a lonely person. This loneliness is the real reason behind most of his choices.
Alucard’s Immortality Turns His Existence Into a Prison
Alucard, originally Vlad the Impaler who battled the Ottoman Empire, lost his humanity through capture and torture. Though he didn’t initially seek to join Hellsing, his willingness to accept Walter’s magical seals and obey Integra’s commands shows he wouldn’t have it any other way.
In Hellsing Ultimate, Alcucard’s sorrow stems from a long life filled with understanding, but little joy. He readily admits he’s a monster and frequently talks about the hollowness that comes with immense power. Even his interest in strong enemies is driven by a search for purpose in a life where little feels new or exciting.
Meliodas Watches the Love of His Life Die Again and Again
Meliodas was cursed with immortality by the Supreme Deity and Demon King as a form of punishment. While he can’t permanently die, each time he’s revived, he loses a piece of his feelings. This creates a painful cycle in his relationship with Elizabeth, as they repeatedly find each other only to be tragically separated by fate.
Driven by a promise to the first Elizabeth, he assembles the Seven Deadly Sins and works to fulfill an ancient prophecy to break a powerful curse. The captain, known for his cheerful and flirtatious personality, isn’t hiding behind a facade; rather, this is simply how he chooses to present himself. His humor and optimism actually amplify his underlying sadness, as they mask a pain that never fully goes away.
Zeno Zoldyck Lives In a World Where Violence Feels Ordinary
Zeno Zoldyck is a seasoned assassin over 60 years old with incredible power – he can shape his life energy into dragons strong enough to flatten terrain. His clothing bears slogans like “A Kill A Day” and “Never Retire,” reflecting his profession. He’s spent decades becoming desensitized to death, treating it as everyday work and living a life most people would find terrifying.
Despite seeming peaceful, Zeno’s acceptance of violence has deeply shaped how he sees the world. He raised his son, Silva, using these methods, but the process ultimately created a distance between them. Silva feels like he can’t fully understand Zeno, as if Zeno is closed off and unreadable.
Hyakkimaru Spends His Life Reclaiming What His Father Sold
Before Hyakkimaru was born, his father made a deal with demons, offering parts of his own body in exchange for political success. This resulted in Hyakkimaru being born without eyes, ears, or limbs, and he relied on artificial replacements and the ability to sense energy to navigate the world.
Hyakkimaru possesses extraordinary powers, but they come with a heavy price: he must battle demons to regain his lost senses and experience the world like a normal human. The story of Dororo highlights the painful consequences of Hyakkimaru reclaiming his body, not just for himself, but for those around him. He isn’t driven by a desire for heroism; he simply wants to live a normal life and will fight for that, even if it means unintentionally harming others.
Eren Yeager Gains the Power to Change the World and Hates the Cost
By the time Eren unleashes the full power of the Founding Titan and initiates the Rumbling, he’s suffered immense loss – his mother was taken by the Smiling Titan, his hometown was destroyed, and he’s watched countless friends die fighting. Attack on Titan shapes Eren into someone with nothing left to lose, making him the most tragic figure and the source of the story’s most destructive power.
In the final moments of the series, Eren explains to Armin that he destroyed everything to secure a future for those he cares about, even though he wouldn’t be there to see it. While Eren was incredibly powerful, his actions were ultimately driven by deep sorrow.
Kaneki Ken Loses More of His Identity With Each Transformation
At the start of Tokyo Ghoul, Kaneki strives to protect others, but by the end, he’s unintentionally harmed almost everyone close to him. A particularly brutal scene in Season One, involving Yamori, depicts Kaneki desperately clinging to sanity while enduring horrific torture, ultimately adopting a twisted worldview directly from his tormentor as a means of survival.
Kaneki is in a constant battle with his dual nature as both a human and a ghoul. Through intense physical and emotional pain, and constant violence, he’s forced to change who he is again and again. Ultimately, he finds peace by accepting all of those different versions of himself and taking responsibility for everything he’s become.
Itachi Uchiha Sacrifices Everything For Sasuke’s Future
Itachi was incredibly powerful, as proven by his mastery of the Mangekyou Sharingan in both eyes – even while battling a serious illness and slowly losing his sight. Despite these challenges, he skillfully played the role of a dangerous villain to protect his brother.
As a huge fan of Naruto, I’ve always been struck by Itachi’s brilliance. Over fifteen years, every single time he interacts with Sasuke, he’s completely in charge, subtly guiding events exactly as he needs them to unfold – even if it’s slowly destroying him. It’s heartbreaking because he can’t explain things to Sasuke; Sasuke’s anger is actually essential to the whole plan. And he can’t confide in anyone else in Konoha either, because the plan is literally protecting the village’s deepest secrets. It’s a masterful, tragic performance, honestly.
Itachi had to keep his true intentions a secret from everyone, as his ultimate plan required him to bear the burden alone. He spent his entire life pretending to be sick and maintaining a false appearance, finally offering a last, gentle touch to his brother’s forehead with his remaining strength before passing away.
Homura Akemi Has to Repeat the Same Tragedy Again and Again
Homura begins her journey in the original timeline as a frail, timid girl, but transforms into a hardened individual, numbed by endless sorrow. With each time reset in Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Homura loses a unique set of memories and experiences, compounding her sense of loss in a way no one else can understand or acknowledge.
Homura’s actions in Rebellion, where she stole Madoka’s power, realistically show the depths of despair she experienced. This stemmed from repeatedly failing to save Madoka across countless timelines, and then being forced to witness Madoka’s ultimate sacrifice despite her efforts.
Guts Carries More Pain Than Any Human Should Endure
Guts’ life begins traumatically – born from the body of a hanged woman, he’s then sold into a life as a child soldier and suffers abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect him. Despite this incredibly difficult start, the story of Berserk doesn’t even show the full extent of his suffering, portraying a life consistently marked by abandonment, abuse, war, and heartbreak.
Guts developed incredible strength from a very young age because he grew up in a brutal world where being weak meant certain death. The tragic event known as the Eclipse saw Griffith sacrifice his entire mercenary band to demons, leaving Guts with devastating injuries – he lost his left arm and right eye, and everyone he cared about was killed. He was left as the only survivor, along with Casca, who suffered severe trauma and didn’t recognize him.
Despite his incredible strength and skills, Guts can’t overcome the trauma that fundamentally changed him. His weapons and fighting prowess can’t bridge the gap between who he once was and the person he became after that fateful night.
