10 Magical Fantasy Anime With Action-Packed Battles

Fantasy is a hugely popular genre, both within anime and across all storytelling. While there are many different kinds of fantasy anime available, fans often still prefer the traditional magical adventures that transport them to exciting and captivating worlds.

Magic and danger often go hand-in-hand, and many popular fantasy stories are known for their exciting action. Whether it’s powerful mages facing off against each other or traditional sword fights with a magical twist, these anime deliver thrilling battles that will keep you hooked.

Drifters Blends Isekai Fantasy & Historical Fiction in a Ruthless, Fast-Moving Story

Traditional fantasy stories often use familiar tropes, but Drifters is different. It’s not the usual story about a powerful hero transported to another world. Instead, it brings historical figures – from famous samurai to notorious dictators – to a dangerous, magical realm.

Kouta Hirano, the creator of the popular manga Hellsing, also wrote Drifters. Like Hellsing, Drifters features action scenes that are known for being violent, fast-paced, and graphic. The series combines fighting skills from different periods in history with a dark and unsettling form of magic.

Claymore’s Classic Dark Fantasy Setting Lends Itself Perfectly to Tense Swordfights

Many high fantasy anime are set in dark, medieval-style worlds, and even though these settings are common, they remain captivating. The anime Claymore is set in one such world – a bleak, magical island terrorized by shape-shifting monsters called Yoma.

Claymore features a group of powerful, half-human, half-monster warriors dedicated to defending the land from dangerous beasts. The story centers around Clare, the weakest of these Claymore warriors. It’s a classic sword and sorcery tale filled with exciting and brutal battles. Unfortunately, the anime adaptation is unfinished, leaving many questions unanswered and plotlines unresolved.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Is an Unfairly Forgotten Action-Fantasy Gem

Often overlooked, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit is a fantastic story about Balsa, a skilled warrior trying to make amends for her past. When she rescues a prince from a deadly plot orchestrated by his own father, she becomes his protector and they set off on a dangerous journey together.

Even though it’s not widely known, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit is a beautifully animated and exciting action series with a surprisingly deep and moving story about change and making things right. The animation is consistently excellent, and the fight scenes are particularly impressive – they feel realistic and grounded, which is rare for a fantasy anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen Features the Best-Animated Fight Scenes in Modern Shonen

Unlike classic fantasy anime, Jujutsu Kaisen is set in a modern, urban Japan haunted by cursed spirits, making it more of an urban fantasy. While it shares similarities with other popular shows like Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer, it feels more focused on traditional magic, presenting sorcery within a gritty, modern world.

Few action series are as good as Jujutsu Kaisen, which is known for its creative powers and stunning animation. The third season has raised the bar for modern action anime, making every fight feel special with its dynamic direction and incredible artistry.

Fate/Zero’s Every Battle Is Unpredictable & Gorgeously Animated

The Fate series blends fantasy with urban settings, but its magic feels more like classic fantasy. Each Fate story centers around the Holy Grail War, a fierce competition where mages summon legendary heroes and battle in pairs to win a powerful artifact.

The Fate series is known for its exciting battles, and the current show, Fate/strange Fake, continues that tradition. However, many fans agree that Studio Ufotable’s Fate/Zero stands out for having the most impressive and unforgettable fights, which are beautifully animated and also explore meaningful conflicts between characters.

Action Isn’t the Selling Point of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, But It Never Fails to Impress

I’ve been hearing a lot about Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and it’s quickly become known as a really special fantasy anime. What stands out isn’t just the fantasy world, but how thoughtfully it explores what happens after the big adventure is over, and really delves into the characters’ feelings. It’s getting a lot of praise for being deep and unique. Now, it’s a bit more relaxed in pacing, but I don’t think that means action fans shouldn’t check it out – there’s still plenty to enjoy.

While not every episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is packed with magical combat, many episodes are quieter, focusing on the characters’ travels and everyday lives. But when a fight does happen, the series consistently delivers thrilling and visually stunning battles that are a joy to watch.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Is a Perfect Introduction to Xianxia Fantasy

I’ve noticed Chinese animation, often called ‘donghua,’ is getting really popular with anime fans around the world. But it’s worth pointing out that the industry has been creating incredibly imaginative and beautiful shows – especially in fantasy – for quite a while. In fact, shows like Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation were gaining international attention even before donghua became widely known outside of China.

If you’re looking to get into xianxia – that amazing fantasy genre inspired by Chinese mythology, and totally different from most anime – I can’t recommend Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation enough! It’s based on a super popular novel, and while the anime adaptation tones down some of the romantic elements, it really delivers when it comes to the action – the fight scenes are absolutely stunning. It’s a fantastic place to start if you’re new to the genre.

Lord of Mysteries Features a Magic System Unlike Any Other

From the studio behind Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, comes Lord of Mysteries. While it shares a creator, this series isn’t a typical cultivation story. Instead, it’s set in a fascinating world inspired by Victorian England, filled with mysterious powers and incredible dangers. Fans consistently praise its expansive scope and richly detailed world.

The Lord of Mysteries adaptation doesn’t delve as deeply into the complex backstory of the original web novel, but it truly shines when it comes to action and visuals. Each episode almost always includes at least one incredible fight scene, and the displayed powers become increasingly powerful and intimidating.

Record of Lodoss War Adheres to Traditions of Magical Fantasy

Considered a classic of old-school fantasy anime, Record of Lodoss War is one of the best examples of a traditional high fantasy story. It feels a lot like playing a Dungeons & Dragons game. The series doesn’t try to be groundbreaking, and that’s okay – sometimes, a well-executed, familiar story is all you need.

The story of Record of Lodoss War is a familiar one – a classic fantasy quest to save the world. However, its warm, nostalgic feel and beautiful animation make even the typical sword fights and magical battles exciting to watch, despite the series not breaking much new ground.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Deserves Acclaim as the Perfect Fantasy Anime

It’s no surprise that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is considered one of the greatest shonen anime ever made. The series begins with grand goals and flawlessly achieves everything it sets out to do, delivering a remarkably complete story that ties up all loose ends in a satisfying way.

Despite its complex themes and detailed world, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood remains a thrilling action series. The show’s battles are not only visually stunning but also delve into the characters’ emotions. Even smaller fights are imaginative and showcase the unique power system in clever ways.
