10 Biggest Easter Eggs, MCU References, and Netflix Nods in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5

Episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again is a standout, consistently engaging from beginning to end. The episode cleverly references the first season of the original Daredevil series on Netflix, and its title, “Grand Design,” is particularly well-suited to the episode’s themes. Here’s a rundown of the most notable Easter eggs, Marvel Cinematic Universe connections, and nods to the earlier Netflix series that we spotted.

The Biggest And Best Easter Eggs and MCU References In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5

The title of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5, “Grand Design,” perfectly fits the episode’s focus on how long-term plans—both old and new—are unfolding for several characters.

The title “Grand Design” also strongly connects to a moving speech Matt Murdock gives for Father Lantam in the final season of the Netflix series Daredevil. He explains God’s plan as a stunningly intricate tapestry, but one that humans can only view from behind, giving us just a hint of the true beauty being created on the other side.

The episode begins with Wilson Fisk and Vanessa strolling along the beach. This scene references a moment from Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 4, where Fisk confessed his dislike of sand between his toes, creating a connection to their earlier conversation.

This episode includes significant flashbacks to the time leading up to and during the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil. It begins with the story of how Vanessa decided to showcase the famous “Rabbit in a Snowstorm” painting, despite her boss’s disapproval. She believed the painting was far more valuable than estimated – and she proved to be right, eventually selling it for a much higher price to her future husband.

The opening of this flashback scene, featuring Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson, includes a joke from Foggy referencing them as ‘Avocados.’ This confirms the scene takes place sometime after the popular ‘Avocados at Law’ gag from the original Netflix series, but before the start of Season One and the founding of their law firm.

As a huge fan of the Daredevil universe, I was really excited to see Toby Leonard Moore back as Wesley! This episode features some fantastic new flashbacks where we see him advising Fisk. Apparently, Fisk was initially thinking about getting into Bitcoin to clean his money, but Wesley steered him towards art instead – that’s how Fisk first meets Vanessa, in a storyline they’re calling ‘Grand Design’. It’s cool to see Wesley again, especially since he tragically died in season one of the original Netflix series, shot by Karen Page.

Daredevil tries to get help saving Bullseye, mentioning a skilled nurse who might be able to assist. This nurse is likely Claire Temple, also known as The Night Nurse.

Rosario Dawson played Claire in several Marvel shows that originally aired on Netflix. Because Dawson continues to work with Disney as Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars universe, fans would likely be thrilled to see her make a guest appearance in a future Marvel project.

Flashbacks show Buck Cashman first worked for Wilson Fisk as a hitman, even before the events of the first season of Daredevil. This explains how he became Fisk’s trusted advisor in the present day, as seen in Daredevil: Born Again.

The show reveals the original name for Matt and Foggy’s law firm was going to be Murdock & Nelson. However, after witnessing Foggy’s compassionate act of helping Lionel McCoy, Matt decided to change the name to Nelson & Murdock instead.

Similarly, Foggy’s influence encourages Daredevil now to help Bullseye instead of handing him over to the AVTF, demonstrating compassion even though it would be simple to just leave him behind.

A scene in the Disney+ series uses footage from the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil to recreate the first meeting between Fisk and Vanessa in an art gallery. The scene prominently features Fisk’s cufflinks, which are the same ones worn by his abusive father before Wilson killed him as a child.

The final scene of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5 features the sound of ocean waves, a poignant callback to happier moments shared by Fisk and Vanessa on the beach. This creates a stark contrast with the devastating loss Vanessa represents for Fisk in the current storyline.

Marvel Studios will release new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 every Tuesday night on Disney+.
