- Zynga shifts focus from blockchain to modern messaging platforms like Discord and Telegram.
- CEO Frank Gibeau says complexity and underdeveloped market were problems in blockchain gaming.
Zynga is now focusing more on contemporary messaging services such as Discord and Telegram, distancing itself from its previous focus on Web3. In essence, the U.S.-based video game creator has opted to explore different concepts rather than blockchain technology.
Zynga aims to explore where future audiences spend time beyond mobile app stores
Following last year’s sale of the Web3 project “Sugartown” to “D20”, the mobile gaming titan is currently assessing emerging platforms where users are most active. It seems that conventional app stores might not be the sole destinations for future expansion.

In a conversation with The Game Business, Zynga’s CEO Frank Gibeau shared the reason behind their decision to abandon blockchain-based experiences. According to him, “We found it challenging to create something substantial in that area.” He further added, “The technology is intriguing, but it’s also a highly complex and immature market, particularly from a legal perspective.
Instead, Zynga is now focusing on connecting with players in their preferred hangouts, which are primarily daily chat and entertainment hubs across multiple platforms. Notably, they recently took a step forward by launching the Discord-exclusive game Tiny Royale: ZOMBIES! last month.
Although Zynga hasn’t publicly declared any upcoming projects for Discord or Telegram as of yet, Gibeau subtly suggested that there could potentially be new endeavors in development for the company.
Gibeau remarked, “We haven’t made any official announcements yet, but we’re constantly seeking an engaged audience. Interestingly, if you observe the rise of TikTok, Discord, and Telegram, you’ll notice a multitude of new platforms that are becoming increasingly popular.

With messaging apps continually expanding their offerings, they might transform into engaging platforms for lightweight, socially interactive games – a field where Zynga excels. However, it’s essential to note that no official announcements have been made as of now. Nonetheless, this tantalizing wait promises an intriguing development.
