Zootropolis 2 lands the fourth-biggest global box-office opening EVER with sensational debut

The new movie Zootropolis 2 had a fantastic opening week! It earned the fourth-highest global box office total ever for a film’s debut, performing much better than the original Zootropolis from 2016.

As reported by Variety, Zootopia 2 (known as Zootropolis 2 outside of America) debuted at number one in the US box office, taking in $156 million from 4,000 theaters since Wednesday, November 26th.

The movie earned an impressive $400 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $556 million.

With these numbers, Zootropolis 2 has become the fourth highest-grossing film at the global box office upon release, surpassing the $541.9 million earned by The Fate of the Furious in 2017. It now ranks behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600.5 million, 2021), Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5 million, 2018), and Avengers: Endgame ($1.2 billion, 2019).

Disney typically performs very well over the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, and Zootopia 2 continued that trend. It had the second-highest Thanksgiving opening ever, falling between Disney’s Moana 2 ($225 million in 2024) and Frozen II ($125 million in 2019).

Disney’s Alan Bergman stated that the fantastic reception to Zootopia 2 demonstrates its popularity around the globe, as well as the exceptional talent of everyone involved in making the film.

The pair will be reunited with familiar faces, including Josh Dallas, who is married to one of the stars. The sequel will also include appearances by Josh Gad, Auliʻi Cravalho, Rachel House, and Dwayne Johnson.

While Zootropolis 2 had a stronger opening weekend than the first Zootropolis film, it still has a high bar to clear. The original movie earned $75 million on its opening weekend and ultimately grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
