Zootopia 2 Wins Thanksgiving Weekend, Goes Way Bigger at Chinese Box Office

Zootopia 2 had a record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend, becoming the highest-grossing film globally for 2025. It performed exceptionally well in China, earning an incredible $272 million.

Zootopia 2 sets several records during the opening weekend

Zootopia 2 earned $156 million domestically over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday and $96.8 million over the three-day weekend. This is the second-biggest Thanksgiving opening ever, only surpassed by Moana 2. The new film performed much better than the original Zootopia, which debuted with $75 million in 2016.

The movie continued to gain popularity internationally, earning $400 million outside of the US, largely thanks to a fantastic start in China. It made $272 million during its opening weekend in China – the biggest debut ever for a non-Chinese animated film, and the sixth-highest opening weekend for any movie ever (according to Deadline).

The Disney sequel has earned $556 million worldwide, making it the biggest animated movie opening of all time and the largest launch ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios. This is a huge success, with earnings more than tripling those of the original film’s opening weekend.

Universal’s Wicked: For Good continued to perform well, earning $93 million in its second weekend. While it didn’t quite match the first weekend’s numbers, it’s still a significant hit, having brought in $393.3 million globally.
