Many families went to see it during the Thanksgiving holiday and school break, bringing in $156 million in its first five days and a remarkable $556 million around the world.

China Helps Zootopia Sequel To Biggest Global Opening Ever For An Animated Movie
The new movie Zootopia 2 faced strong competition from other animated films, including its own award-winning first installment. Over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, it earned an estimated $156 million in the US (according to The Numbers), making it the second-highest Thanksgiving opening ever. It didn’t quite reach the $225 million earned by last year’s Disney sequel, Moana 2.
The movie earned the majority of its revenue internationally, particularly in China. With $400 million from outside North America, its total worldwide earnings reached $556 million. This makes it the highest-grossing global debut of 2025 and the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film.
The film earned around $272 million in China, where it’s incredibly popular—evidenced by the new Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland, according to Variety. Zootopia 2 had the biggest opening weekend for an animated movie in Chinese history, and the second-biggest premiere overall, surpassed only by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
As a huge animation fan, I was thrilled to see that the Zootopia sequel is off to a fantastic start! It earned $96.8 million in its opening weekend here in the US and Canada, which is even better than the original Zootopia did back in 2016 when it debuted with $75 million. And that first Zootopia movie was a massive hit – it made over $341 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide, plus it even won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature! I’m really excited to see where the sequel goes from here, with Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman reprising their roles as Judy and Nick.
The first Zootopia movie was a hit, which definitely built anticipation for the sequel and a return to the world of talking animals. Positive reviews also played a role – it earned a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an A from CinemaScore, and a 4-star review from TopMob.
As a moviegoer, I’ve noticed there haven’t been many new animated films for kids recently. It really helps that The Bad Guys 2 was the last one released back in August – it feels like ages ago!
Audiences Are Still Enchanted By Wicked: For Good, But This Year’s Thanksgiving Falls Short Of Record-Setting 2024
Okay, so Wicked: For Good didn’t quite repeat its massive opening weekend numbers, bringing in $62.8 million this weekend. Honestly, a 57% drop isn’t something to panic about. It actually started stronger than the first Wicked movie did! But here’s the thing – the first film had a better Thanksgiving weekend overall, making $118 million compared to For Good‘s $93 million over those five days. Still, as a movie fan, I’m excited to see where this adaptation goes!
The musical Wicked: For Good continues to be a hit around the world, earning nearly $400 million – currently at $393.3 million – after just ten days.
Look, the recent Moana 2 and Wicked movies did really well at the box office, which is great! But honestly, they didn’t quite reach the incredible numbers we saw last year. This Thanksgiving brought in $293 million, which is still good, but it puts us at number four for all-time highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekends. We were behind 2024, 2018 (thanks to Ralph Breaks the Internet and others), and 2014, when The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was huge. Hopefully, next year we can break those records!
Eternity And Hamnet See Modest Numbers In Limited Release
While Zootopia 2 was the biggest movie released over Thanksgiving weekend, another new film also made a splash. Eternity, a new movie from A24 starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, earned $5.2 million in its first five days despite being shown in limited theaters. Our team at TopMob is very impressed with the afterlife romantic comedy, with some even calling it the best movie of 2025 and praising its ability to revitalize the genre.
It’ll be interesting to see if the movie can break into the top five after it’s shown in more cinemas next week.
Keep an eye on the film Hamnet, which quickly became a hit, reaching the Top 10 despite being shown in only a limited number of theaters. Directed by Academy Award-winning Chloé Zhao, this historical drama tells a fictional story about William Shakespeare, his son Hamnet, and how the boy’s death impacted Shakespeare’s marriage and ultimately inspired the play Hamlet.
Featuring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, this movie is predicted to be a strong contender for awards at the upcoming Academy Awards. Keep an eye out for it when it’s released in theaters on December 12th.
