It appears Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia have become Disney Animation’s most successful pair, surpassing even Anna and Elsa from Frozen. Frozen was a massive hit, with the first movie earning $1.3 billion globally, and Frozen II becoming Disney Animation’s highest-grossing film at $1.45 billion. Many thought Frozen II‘s record would only be broken by another Frozen film, but Zootopia 2 has surprisingly taken the lead.
According to Variety, Zootopia 2 has become Walt Disney Animation’s highest-grossing movie ever, surpassing Frozen II. The sequel has earned $1.46 billion globally, exceeding Frozen II’s total. Although Frozen II earned $477 million domestically (more than Zootopia 2’s $333 million), Zootopia 2 is performing exceptionally well internationally, with $1.13 billion in worldwide ticket sales. It’s been particularly successful in China, where it has grossed $500 million.

As a huge movie fan, I’m blown away by how well Zootopia 2 is doing! It’s already the second highest-grossing film globally, just behind Ne Zha II‘s incredible $2.15 billion. While it might not quite reach the top spot, it’s on track to be the biggest Hollywood hit of the year. The only real competition comes from Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has earned $794 million so far. And here’s the crazy part – Disney could actually end up with three films in the top five worldwide! Lilo and Stitch is currently sitting pretty at number three with $1.03 billion, so it’s looking like a massive year for the studio.
The highly anticipated animated sequel is performing very well in the United States. Over the Christmas weekend, in its fifth week of release, Zootopia 2 climbed to second place at the box office, earning $25.2 million over the four-day holiday. Currently, Zootopia 2 is the sixth highest-grossing film of 2025 domestically, and it has the potential to surpass films like Wicked: For Good and Jurassic World: Rebirth over the New Year. As the moviegoing season slows down in January, Zootopia 2 could continue to climb the box office rankings.

With Zootopia 2 hinting at another sequel and having done well in theaters, it’s likely we’ll see more of those characters. However, the Frozen franchise has the potential to once again become Disney Animation’s biggest box office success. Frozen 3 is scheduled for release on November 24, 2027 – a popular time for big Disney releases, just like the first Frozen, Moana 2, and Zootopia 2. A fourth Frozen movie is also planned, though its release date is still unknown. It remains to be seen if Frozen can regain its position as Disney’s most profitable franchise, or if it’s time to move on.
