Zoe Saldana’s Oscar Dreams Shattered by Controversial Co-Star Scandal!

Zoe Saldana expressed her disappointment over the controversy tarnishing the beloved film, Emilia Perez, for which she won an Oscar.

A fellow actor, Karla Sofia Gascon (who’s currently nominated for a Best Actress Oscar), has resurfaced old tweets of hers that sparked some debate and caused controversy in the past.

Despite Gascon’s apology for the messages, there are numerous individuals in Hollywood who believe that her previous actions could potentially harm the film during the Oscars ceremony.

And it could bring down Saldana, too, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Zoe again talked to Variety about how she feels over the setback.

46-year-old Saldana expressed her feelings to Variety by saying, “I’ve been feeling down. Over and over again, this is the emotion I’ve felt ever since everything took place, as it’s resided deeply within me.

I share your disappointment as well. It’s important to note that I can only comment on my own actions, not those of others. As for me, I honestly didn’t expect us to end up in this situation at all.

In my perspective, I believe I’ve shared my thoughts sufficiently on the matter. There’s no need for an instant solution, as we can take our time to ponder over it.

In a turn of events, Saldana earned her initial Academy Award nomination by portraying Rita in a movie filmed in Spanish. She’s currently considered the front-runner to take home the award.

Last week Zoe was asked about Karla’s posts during a Q and A in London.

Zoe shared that she feels deeply saddened since she doesn’t approve of it, and she has zero patience for any harmful speech directed at individuals from any community.

‘I can honestly say that everyone involved in this movie shared an environment focused on inclusivity, collaboration, and equality regarding race, culture, and gender. It’s disheartening to see…’

Zoe insisted that she wants to spread a message of ‘love’ and ‘support’.

Apart from stating this, she added: ‘What I can confirm is that everyone who collaborated to share this tale did so out of affection, admiration, and wonder. We are committed to conveying this message further. At the moment, that’s all we have to share.’

In a turn of events, Emilia Perez, the transgender actress who made history as the first to receive an Oscar nomination, faced criticism following the reemergence of her past tweets concerning the Muslim community, the tragic passing of George Floyd, and diversity issues at the Academy Awards.

Karla issued a statement expressing her understanding of the distress caused by her previous social media posts. Being part of a marginalized group, she recognizes this hurt all too intimately and sincerely apologizes to those she’s inadvertently hurt. Throughout her life, she has been a champion for a brighter future, believing that goodness will ultimately overcome adversity.

There was a lot of chatter on social media on Monday about Netflix apparently taking Karla out of promotional materials for its Academy Award-nominated movie, Emilia Pérez, a whole month before the 97th Academy Awards.

Many users on platforms like X, Twitter, and Reddit suggested that the streamer seemed intent on reducing the visibility of Gascón during their Oscar promotions for the film.

The shift in course was sparked by resurgent social media posts from the actress, which ignited a storm of controversy due to accusations of racism, homophobia, and body shaming, along with other offensive behaviors.

The promotional content for ‘For Your Awards Consideration’ (FYC) primarily emphasized Zoe Saldana, as she was the main focus in the promotional poster shared online, and also on Netflix’s FYC page where a detailed image of her face was displayed prominently.

The advertisement for the Oscars’ “For Your Consideration” list has omitted Karla Sofia Gascón this time around, leaving me puzzled as to why she was excluded!

In the category of Best Actress, Gascon finds herself in competition with Demi Moore from The Substance, Mikey Madison of Anora, Fernanda Torres of I’m Still Here, and Cynthia Erivo from Wicked.

Or simply:

Gascon is nominated alongside Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) in the Best Actress category.

Among the contenders for Best Supporting Actress, Zoe Saldana seems to be the clear frontrunner to receive the award against competitors such as Ariana Grande from Wicked, Felicity Jones from The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini from Conclave, and Monica Barbaro from A Complete Unknown.

This year, at the Oscar nominee announcement held in Beverly Hills on January 23, Emilia Perez, under the direction of Jacques Audiard, garnered a leading 13 nominations.

Additionally, the movie garnered notable recognitions such as “Best Film of the Year,” “Best Adapted Screenplay,” and “Best Director” nominations for Audiard.
