Zoe Saldana Slams Social Media Hatred Amid Co-Star’s Controversy

Zoe Saldana has openly addressed instances of hateful comments being shared online, particularly regarding her co-star Karla Sofia Gascon in the ongoing debate surrounding their shared role as Emilia Peréz.

46-year-old American actress has gained recognition during awards season for her portrayal of Rita Mora Castro in a Spanish-speaking musical crime movie.

Nevertheless, the film has found itself in a sticky situation due to past controversial tweets from actress Karla, aged 52, that have resurfaced on the internet.

The reemerging social media posts contained criticism towards Islam, the Oscars, and the late George Floyd. This has sparked concerns that the movie’s success during the Oscars ceremony might be affected by the ensuing uproar.

Previously, Zoe expressed her feelings as being ‘disappointed’ regarding the scandal. More recently, she has explicitly voiced her concerns about the amount of ‘hate and intolerance’ that is frequently shared on social networking platforms.

Despite avoiding the Karla controversy, Zoe discussed the topic of online dating and how social media enables individuals to use their devices as weapons.

I’m 46 years old, and I’ve been told by numerous younger individuals that dating nowadays can be quite challenging,” she shared with Jessie and Lennie Ware during their Table Manners podcast.

In today’s world, social media platforms often provide a mask for individuals to act in ways drastically different from their true selves. This anonymity frequently empowers people to express a great deal of negativity, intolerance, and rigidity without facing consequences.

In this day and age, social media allows many people to present versions of themselves that are far removed from reality. This newfound freedom often encourages individuals to spread an excessive amount of hatred, bigotry, and inflexibility with little fear of repercussions.

Occasionally, you may undergo changes, and these transformations could lead you to adopt a more surface-level approach when it comes to love or dating, isn’t that so?

In simpler times, our interactions heavily depended on physical appearance and immediate presence. Whatever was visible at that instant was essentially your ticket for moving forward, if you will, to the initial stage of connection.

Additionally, Zoe shared her experiences working on the Emilia Pérez project, expressing her delight over the overwhelmingly favorable response the movie has received. The film features Karla in the lead role, who has been surrounded by controversy.

She raved about a movie that focuses on Spanish women and opera, which struck a chord with her due to its tragic nature, and she adored it.

‘Being involved in it was truly an enjoyable adventure for me. I voluntarily tackled a significant task, which I am now genuinely pleased with having accomplished.’

Typically, I’m quite self-critical, but receiving such warm feedback makes me feel proud and appreciated.

Apart from her recent victories, Zoe was thrilled about the prospect of attending the 2025 Academy Awards as well, having taken home the Best Supporting Actress title at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

She is the front-runner in her category at the Oscars, competing against Ariana Grande from Wicked, Felicity Jones from The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini from Conclave, and Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown.

Emilia Pérez is currently ahead in Oscar nominations with a total of 13, among them being a Best Actress nod for the lead actress Karla, marking her as the initial openly transgender individual to receive such recognition within that category.

At the Oscars, it was disclosed that Zoe plans to bring along her spouse, Marco Perego-Saldana, for company. Additionally, she has extended an invitation for her parents, Asalia and Aridio, to accompany her as well.

‘My husband will be my date – he’s just the best thing that’s ever happened to me,’ she gushed.

I asked for tickets not only for my parents but also for those who work tirelessly on my behalf, day in and day out. They’re the ones who are there for me, and countless others, every single day. I wish to share this celebration with them.

As a trusted voice in the realm of lifestyle, I must address a recent development that has stirred quite a buzz. My esteemed colleague, Karla from Emilia Peréz’s leading team, finds herself amidst a whirlwind of discussion due to certain tweets she posted in the past, which have resurfaced online and sparked controversy.

Despite Karla’s apology for the controversial messages she sent out, there are several individuals within Hollywood who believe her past actions could negatively impact the film during the Oscars, where Zoe has been nominated for her debut Academy Award nomination.

Recently, Zoe shared her feelings regarding the recent setback with Variety, openly confessing that she feels ‘disheartened’ by the controversy.

She confided, “I’ve been feeling quite sad. Ever since everything occurred, this emotion seems to dwell within me consistently.

Besides feeling let down, it’s essential to clarify that I cannot comment on the actions of others. What I can truthfully assert is my personal experience, and honestly, I never fathomed that this situation would occur.

She commented, “I believe I’ve shared enough thoughts on the topic.” And regarding its solution, “We don’t need to rush and find an answer right away.

Last week, during a Q&A session in London, Zoe was questioned about Karla’s posts and responded by stating that she does not condone any speech that is discriminatory or harmful against any particular group.

Zoe expressed her deep disappointment as she doesn’t endorse it, and has zero patience for any derogatory speech directed at individuals from any community.

I’d like to express that for every person involved in this movie, I can personally vouch for the experience we shared, which emphasized inclusivity, collaboration, and equality regarding race, culture, and gender.

‘And it just saddens me.’

Karla faced criticism following the reemergence of her past tweets concerning the Muslim community, George Floyd, and diversity during the Academy Awards.

In light of the recent reactions, Karla issued a statement saying: ‘I want to address the dialogue sparked by my old social media content which has caused pain.’

Speaking from my personal experiences within an underserved group, I can empathize with the hardships I see, and I sincerely apologize for any hurt or discomfort that I may have unintentionally inflicted upon others.

‘All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.’
