With another very successful weekend at the movies, James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has solidified Zoe Saldaña’s position as a box office superstar.
Last week, the third “Avatar” film earned $21.3 million in North America, pushing its worldwide total to $1.23 billion. Thanks to this success, Zoe Saldaña has become the highest-grossing actor in movie history, surpassing Scarlett Johansson.
Scarlett Johansson is now the highest-grossing actor of all time, having earned over $15.47 billion from movies worldwide, according to the Numbers. She recently passed fellow “Avengers” star Samuel L. Jackson, thanks to the success of last summer’s “Jurassic World Rebirth.”
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ has dynamite villains and dialogue that’s surf-bro hysterical
I was really captivated by Oona Chaplin and Stephen Lang – they brought such compelling energy to James Cameron’s latest Avatar film! It’s a visually stunning and dreamlike return to Pandora, though it does revisit a lot of familiar themes and ideas.
Zoe Saldaña’s success is largely due to her starring roles in three of the biggest blockbuster movies ever made: “Avatar” (2009), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022). These films have collectively earned nearly $8 billion worldwide.
Saldaña is unique among actors for being in four films that each earned over $2 billion at the global box office. One of those films, 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” made $2.05 billion worldwide.
Zoe Saldaña demonstrated her acting range last year, proving she’s more than just a star of blockbuster films when she won her first Academy Award for her performance in the thought-provoking musical “Emilia Pérez.” This historic win made her the first actor of Dominican heritage to receive an Oscar.

Awards
I was so thrilled to hear Karla Souza speak at the Oscars! She shared that she’s a proud daughter of immigrants, someone who works hard and approaches everything with dignity. What really got to me was when she said she’s the first American of Dominican descent to ever win an Oscar – that’s incredible and so inspiring!
Fighting back tears while accepting her award, she shared that she was a first-generation American, the daughter of immigrants, and proud of her hardworking family. She also made history as the first American of Dominican heritage to win an Academy Award, expressing hope that many more would follow in her footsteps.
As a huge cinema fan, I was thrilled to see Saldaña rightfully win her Oscar. It was a bit awkward, though, watching her accept it while everyone was still talking about some of the issues with the film – specifically how it depicted Mexican people and transgender characters. And then there was the whole situation with her co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, and those really awful old tweets that came to light – they were filled with hateful things about Muslims, diversity, and just racist language in general. It definitely cast a shadow over everything.
