In the game Zenless Zone Zero, Zhu Yuan is a powerful Attack Agent with a limited S-rank status, specializing in causing anomaly damage using ethereal attacks. Functioning as the team’s primary Damage Per Second (DPS) dealer for ethereal elements, she excels at inflicting substantial damage from afar. Capable of dishing out both physical and ether damage, Zhu Yuan can switch between two modes to maximize her offensive potential. Moreover, she deals extra harm to enemies that have been stunned.

Overview

In version 1.0, Zhu Yuan, head of the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team, serves as the primary damage dealer for her team as a ether elemental agent. She can toggle between Assault and Suppressive modes, dishing out both physical and ether damage. After executing her fourth or fifth basic attack in assault mode, she acquires Enhanced Shotshells which amplify her damage when used with assists, special abilities, or chain attacks. Her main ability amplifies the damage dealt by these enhanced shotshells even further, and attacking stunned enemies multiplies the effect. A notable feature of her skill set is an added ability that boosts her critical hit rate by 30% for a duration of 10 seconds following the use of a special, chain, or ultimate ability, making it more effective to build her for Crit Damage rather than Crit Rate.

W-Engines

S – Riot Suppressor Mark VI

⭐ Crit Damage

• Increases CRIT Rate by 15%. Launching an EX Special Attack grants the equipper 8 Charge stacks, up to a maximum of 8 stacks. Whenever the equipper’s Basic Attack deals Ether DMG, consumes a Charge stack and increases the skill’s DMG by 35%.
• As Zhu Yuan’s Signature W-Engine, it fits perfectly with her kit, as not only does it grant Crit Damage, which with her additional ability granting her 30% crit chance, it will also boost her damage considerably upon her executing her Ex Special followed up by basic attack.

S – The Brimstone

⭐ Attack

• Upon hitting an enemy with a Basic Attack, Dash Attack, or Dodge Counter, the equipper’s ATK increases by 3.5/4.4/5.2/6/7% for 8s, stacking up to 8 times. This effect can trigger once every 0.5s. The duration of each stack is calculated separately.
• As Zhu Yuan is a very fast attacker, she will be able to constantly keep up the maximum amount of stacks for this W-Engine, ensuring she gets the most out of the attack boost.

A – Cannon Rotor

⭐ Crit Rate

• Increases ATK by 7.5/8.6/9.7/10.8/12%. Attacks that land a CRIT on an enemy will inflict an additional 200% of ATK as DMG. This effect can only be triggered once every 8/7.5/7/6.5/6s.
• As Zhu Yuan already has a high crit rate if you take into account her additional ability, opting to go with Cannon Rotor makes it so that you can pretty much ignore crit rate on her Disc Drives in favor of going all out on Crit Damage, not to mention the attack boost and 200% bonus attack that could cause her ultimate to do a lot of damage.

A – Starlight Engine

⭐ ATK

• Launching a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist increases the equipper’s ATK by 12/13.8/15.6/17.4/19.2% for 12s
• Upon executing a dodge counter, Zhu Yuan gains 1 enhanced shotshell, along with dealing ether damage, so you will end up using her dodge counter a lot, hence the passive from this W-Engine will be activated constantly, granting a nice attack boost for when she rotates in.

A – Street Superstar

⭐ ATK

• Whenever a squad member launches a Chain Attack, the equipper gains a Charge stack, stacking up to 3 times. Upon activating their own Ultimate, the equipper consumes all Charge stacks, and each stack increases the skill’s DMG by 15/17.2/19.5/21.7/24%.
• Zhu Yuan’s ultimate attack does a lot of damage, so with this W-Engine, you will be able to deal even more burst damage, although the other 4 above in my opinion are better options for her.

Option 1 – “Critical Justice“

4 Piece Chaotic Metal

(2) Increases Ether DMG by 10%.

(4) The enhancer’s critical damage hike is bumped up by 20%. Whenever a character in the team sets off Corruption’s extra harm, this bonus escalates an additional 5.5% for 8 seconds, piling up to a max of 6 instances. Re-triggering this event restarts the timer.

2 Piece Wood Pecker Electro

(2) Increases CRIT Rate by 8%.

Main Stats: IV. Crit DMG | V. Ether Damage | VI. ATK

Sub stats in order of priority:

1. Crit DMG | 2. ATK% | 3. Crit Rate | 4. Anomaly Prof

This build is fully focused on maximizing Zhu Yuan’s critical hit and critical damage passives. Not only does her kit already have a build in 30% crit rate if her additional ability is active, but her core stat is also Crit DMG, so this build boosts the effectiveness of her even more by taking advantage of this. You should forgo raising her Crit Rate too much on her substats, or at least keep it at a low priority in favor of Crit Damage, especially if you’re using her signature W-Engine or Cannon Rotor. You will want an ether focused team in order to make the most out of this build.

Option 2 – “Rapid Response”

4 Piece Puffer Electro

(2) Increases PEN Ratio by 8%.

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: “Boosting my Ultimate DMG by an impressive 20%, and with each use, I temporarily supercharge my attack, lifting it by 15% for a solid twelve seconds.”

2 Piece Chaotic Metal

(2) Increases Ether DMG by 10%.

Main Stats: IV. Crit DMG | V. Ether Damage | VI. ATK

Sub stats in order of priority:

1.  Crit Rate or Crit DMG | 2. ATK% | 3. Pen (If using Pen Ratio) | 4. Anomaly Prof

Zhu Yuan’s build maximizes her capacity for dealing burst damage. She is the best character in the game for this role, differing from Ellen who keeps fighting on the battlefield. With an abundance of enhanced shotshells at her disposal, Zhu comes and goes from the fray. Given that she specializes in burst damage and her ultimate deals a significant amount of it, this build amplifies her burst damage potential even further. Additionally, it grants her Penetration Ratio, allowing her to inflict even more damage.

Skill Priority

ALWAYS PRIOIRITZE CORE SKILL FIRST!!!

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of strategic gaming, I can confidently say that this particular aspect of a character’s abilities should not be your primary concern. With her other skills boasting such high priority levels, it would be wiser to focus your attention there first.

Bangboo

S – Resonaboo

If your team has at least two characters with the Ether attribute, the Bangboo Chain Attack will cause 100% more Anomaly Buildup.

If you prefer having an Ether team for applying the Corruption status more frequently, then that team’s chain attack becomes your top choice, as it adds an extra 100% buildup of Ether anomaly to the target.

S – Butler

If you have two or more Victoria Housekeeping Company characters in your team, activating their skills will grant an extra 20% Energy.

If you’re building a non-Ether team and intend to include Rina and Lycaon, consider adding Butler for optimal results. Butler’s ability to provide extra energy makes it easier to use your EX Special more frequently, enhancing Zhu Yuan’s role as a burst damage dealer.

A – Devilboo

If your team has at least two characters with the Ether Attribute, the power of Bangboo Chain Attack is amplified by 40% in terms of Anomaly Buildup. Once this ability is triggered, it lasts for an additional 5 seconds and can be activated a total of 4 more times.

An alternative, somewhat less powerful option than Reasonaboo, but effective in increasing the speed at which you can taint enemies for your Ether Team, making it a strong runner-up choice.

A – Sumoboo

As a fan of this game, when I have at least one Stun character in my team, the active skill I use becomes even more effective. Instead of the usual 100% daze inflicted on enemies, it now causes an additional 18% daze when their current daze level is above 50%. This means that my enemies will be dazed for a longer duration, giving me and my team an edge in the battle.

Zhu Yuan inflicts maximum damage by attacking stunned enemies. Thus, having Sumoboo, who is known for causing stuns, as your general is a smart choice, ensuring optimal use of Zhu Yuan’s passive ability.

Optimal Team Comps

Team 1 – Ether

In the game at present, there are just two ether units available: Zhu Yuan, Nicole, and Anby. Starting from version 1.0, this trio will be referred to as your Ether Team. When you employ this team, their collective abilities will be fulfilled. For instance, after using an EX Special Attack, Chain Attack, or Ultimate, Zhu Yuan’s CRIT Rate is amplified by an impressive 30% for a duration of 10 seconds. To maximize the potential of her core passive, it is essential to have a unit capable of inflicting stun in your squad. Anby serves this purpose and enables Nicole to activate her additional ability, rendering this combination the sole team that satisfies all the prerequisites for an Ether-centric team.

Team 2 – Premium

Team Zhu Yuan, comprised of elite agents Zhu Yuan, Lycaon, and Rina, will provide you with the optimal premium team for version 1.0 of Zhu Yuan. Having Rina as your support fulfills Zhu Yuan’s extra ability prerequisites, while both Lycaon and Rina being in the same faction is an added bonus. Lycaon, known for being the best stun unit in the game, increases the frequency of activating Zhu Yuan’s core passive. Moreover, Rina contributes Penetration Ratio to the team, amplifying Zhu Yuan’s burst damage potential.
