Zendaya opens up about “scary” career change

As a devoted fan and admirer of Zendaya‘s extraordinary talent, I can’t help but be captivated by her journey from a young Disney star to a versatile actress taking on complex roles that resonate deeply with audiences. Her recent reflections on transitioning away from teenage characters in favor of adult roles are particularly intriguing, as she grapples with the challenges and opportunities that come with maturing both personally and professionally.

Having followed Zendaya’s career since her days on “Shake It Up” and “Euphoria,” I am thrilled to see her stepping into more leading roles that showcase her range as an actress. The prospect of watching her portray Tashi Duncan in Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” has me eagerly awaiting its release, especially given the unique challenges and complexities inherent in the character.

What strikes me most about Zendaya is her ability to relate to the characters she plays, as evidenced by her connection with Tashi Duncan. As someone who has found immense fulfillment in my own creative pursuits, I can empathize with the fear of losing that which brings joy and purpose to one’s life. It’s a universal fear that transcends age, profession, or background, and Zendaya’s ability to articulate this struggle is nothing short of remarkable.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony of a former child star playing a character grappling with the loss of her passion. After all, as they say, “the show must go on,” even when it’s time to move on from one role and embrace the next. Zendaya is certainly proving that she’s up for the challenge!

Actress Zendaya, famously known for her role as Spider-Man, mused about moving into more mature characters following years of portraying teenage roles.

Originally a child actor who found fame on the Disney Channel series ‘Shake It Up’ at the age of 14, Zendaya has since continued her acting career portraying a teenager in the HBO program ‘Euphoria’.

As I sat down for The Hollywood Reporter’s Actress Roundtable, I shared that for quite some time now, I’ve been embodying the role of a teenager, even though I’m no longer one myself.

Playing Rue on Euphoria has been one of the most precious experiences of my life, but eventually I must move forward and portray characters that are older than her. This transition was quite daunting for me.

Actress from the movie Dune takes on the role of a tennis champion-turned-coach, played out across various stages of her life, in Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed film, Challengers (nominated for awards).

Being the main actress for the first time, as well as participating in the production process, was both thrilling and somewhat intimidating, I must say.

However, when I come across certain roles, I find myself thinking, “I simply can’t resist the chance to portray this character.

In the series titled “Challengers“, Zendaya portrays Tashi Duncan, a rising tennis sensation whose career is cut short by an injury early on. As a result, she has to switch gears and take up coaching instead.

The ensemble is completed by Josh O’Connor portraying Patrick Zweig and Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, who are two promising tennis players, whose paths cross with Tashi’s.

Speaking about her connection with the character, Zendaya expressed that she found common ground with Tashi as both had to discover their identities after giving up tennis.

She felt invigorating to me. She didn’t offer apologies for her urge to control, even amidst the chaos of her own life, nor for living vicariously through others, as she stated.

I find myself speaking about it often, as I’m deeply passionate about my work. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to make a living from something I love. Sometimes, I ponder, ‘What if this were suddenly taken from me?’

Her deep passion was tennis, yet it was abruptly taken away from her. Now, she struggles to recognize herself without this integral part of her identity.

Her role as Tashi garnered her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress. Additionally, the movie was nominated in other three categories, one of which is Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
