Zelda: Twilight Princess Ports Get Unexpected Update

Almost all of the classic Zelda games are now available on the Switch, with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and a few older titles from the Game Boy and DS eras being the main exceptions. While fans are still hoping for an official update for Twilight Princess, there’s exciting news: an unofficial port of the game to the Switch may be in development.

As reported by VideoGameEsoterica on X, the game Twilight Princess, released almost 20 years ago, has been carefully decompiled. This means the code has been reconstructed, potentially allowing fans to create unofficial versions for PC and other platforms. While no one has yet announced plans to actually make a playable version of Link’s older adventure, this development is still a significant and promising step for the project.

Twilight Princess Has Been Decompiled

Because people are still very interested in Twilight Princess even after the release of its updated HD version over ten years ago, the recent completion of its decompilation is encouraging for future game preservation efforts, even if Nintendo doesn’t decide to release a port themselves.

Even though someone has successfully taken apart the code of Twilight Princess, it doesn’t guarantee we’ll see a working version on PC anytime soon. Many other games, like Paper Mario, have had their code analyzed for years without ever getting an official PC release.

Although an official Twilight Princess port for the Switch seems unlikely in the near future, a fan-made version could be available within months or a few years – it all depends on how many dedicated and skilled fans are willing to devote the time and effort to create it.

Why This Matters For Native Ports

Even if a fan project to port Twilight Princess isn’t available for a while, the process of decompiling the game is still incredibly valuable. A native port – meaning a version built to run directly on modern systems – would offer a much better experience than simply emulating the game, potentially exceeding the quality of the original release.

Projects like Zelda64: Recompiled and the Ship of Harkinian port offer a great way to replay the classic Ocarina of Time with modern improvements. These include higher resolution, smooth 60 frames-per-second gameplay, and many quality-of-life features that make the game more enjoyable.

Seeing native ports allow for fan-made modifications makes it easy to imagine how amazing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess could be with a dedicated modding team.
