Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will feature playable Link, ESRB rating says
As a longtime Zelda fan with countless hours logged in Hyrule, I must confess my initial excitement for Princess Zelda taking center stage in “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” was tempered by the recent revelation that Link would still be playable. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t appreciate Link’s contributions to the series; he’s been my trusty sidekick for decades. But after all these years, isn’t it about time we let Zelda shine on her own?
In an unexpected turn of events, the legendary hero Link, known for his bravery, seldom faces scrutiny. Yet, today marks an unfortunate exception. After a long reign of 38 years, Link is stepping aside as the leading character in the upcoming “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.” Instead, Princess Zelda will take center stage and be the playable protagonist. However, not long after this announcement, it was disclosed that Link couldn’t resist making an appearance. He’ll also be featured as a playable character in the game.
A recent announcement from the ESRB about the game’s rating sheds light on its content. The game is classified as suitable for all ages with the label “E for Everyone.” According to the ESRB’s description, players will take on the character of Zelda in this adventure game, as she tries to heal rifts in Hyrule and save Link. The gameplay perspective is from a three-quarter angle, allowing players to traverse diverse environments while engaging with stylized adversaries such as humans and creatures.
Later on, the ESRB made an unexpected announcement: “In this game, as Link, users wield a sword and fire arrows at adversaries. Meanwhile, Zelda employs a magical wand to evoke creatures such as inflatable knights, pig soldiers, and blobs for combat.”
In a straightforward manner, it’s important to note that this development isn’t shocking – the trailer for “Echoes of Wisdom” indicates that Link will initially engage in combat against soldiers to save Zelda and confront Ganon. However, an unexpected twist occurs as Link tumbles into a mysterious fissure. Consequently, it falls upon Zelda to embark on a rescue mission to save him.
The most plausible interpretation of the ESRB’s annotation is that this part of the video represents a playable introduction; it features a bird’s-eye perspective of Link fighting Ganon, which bears a strong resemblance to actual gameplay. Nonetheless, enthusiasts have put forward several alternative hypotheses, such as another appearance by Link in the finale, a two-player setup, or an alternate game mode where Link takes the place of Zelda.
We’ve reached out to Nintendo for more information on the role and abilities of Link in their upcoming game from TopMob, as well as clarification about his tendency to speak up and potential allegiance.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will be released for Nintendo Switch on Sept. 26.
