Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom calls back to lots of other Zelda games

As a seasoned Zelda fan who has spent countless hours traversing Hyrule and beyond since the days of the Game Boy Color, I must say that Nintendo never ceases to impress me with their knack for weaving intricate connections between their games. With the latest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it’s clear that they’ve delved deep into the franchise’s rich history while pushing the series forward.

Upon unveiling the trailer for “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” on Monday, it’s evident that the upcoming game draws heavily from the esteemed series it belongs to. Set to launch on September 26 for Nintendo Switch, fans have ample time before its release to dissect and appreciate its connections to the franchise.

Drawing inspiration from two distinct Zoras, as not seen since “The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages”, and the Bind ability, similar to Ultrahand, “Echoes of Wisdom” aims to leverage the rich history of the franchise to develop a game that propels the series into new territory.

In many The Legend of Zelda video games, the format tends to be similar and they often make references to one another. Here’s what sets Echoes of Wisdom apart:

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

A more straightforward comparison between “Echoes of Wisdom” and “2019’s The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening” would be to say that both share a similar top-down, 3D visual style reminiscent of Hyrule, but with an endearing, whimsical touch. Notably, “Link’s Awakening” is actually a remake of the 1993 game for the Game Boy system, while “Echoes of Wisdom” presents a fresh and original gaming experience, offering new concepts and ideas.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Referencing the two latest installments in the Zelda series, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” it’s evident that their influence can be seen in the design of “Echoes of Wisdom.” While the user interface and menus aren’t identical, they share a similar foundation. Delving deeper into the gameplay, the spirit of “Tears of the Kingdom” is palpable in “Echoes of Wisdom.” A key aspect of “Tears of the Kingdom” is that each player’s journey is unique; there are numerous ways to overcome challenges or navigate through Hyrule.

It appears that, just like “Echoes of Wisdom”, Zelda’s Tri-Rod also grants an ability called Echoes. This allows her to duplicate objects or enemies within the game world. Instead of using a sword, these echoed items are used for fighting and solving puzzles. Combined with the Bind ability, which functions similarly to “Tears of the Kingdom’s” Ultrahand, the possibilities for problem-solving seem virtually limitless.

In the initial trailer for Echoes of Wisdom, the character is depicted wearing a cape and armed with a bow and sword, the designs on which seem to mirror the Zonai elements from Tears of the Kingdom. The Zonai were later pivotal in the storyline of Tears of the Kingdom, having been established in an earlier game, Breath of the Wild.

In conclusion, the game “Echoes of Wisdom” adopts the naming system used in “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”. For instance, instead of calling certain locations by their traditional names like Death Mountain, it opts for Eldin Volcano.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

In the 2001 game for Game Boy Color titled “The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages“, there are two distinct forms of Zoras. One type resides in the river, while another inhabits the sea. These two species of Zoras have a long-standing feud, which is evident in “Oracle of Ages” and seems to persist in “Echoes of Wisdom“.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the striking resemblance between the Ganon in “Echoes of Wisdom” and the one from the 1991 Super Nintendo game, “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.” Both share a pig-faced, blue form, donning Horned armor and a red cape. However, what sets them apart is the weapon they wield – while Ganon in “A Link to the Past” uses a single-headed trident, his counterpart in “Echoes of Wisdom” brandishes a menacing double-headed trident. Interestingly, a similar double-bladed trident can be found in “Link’s Awakening,” when Link battles the Shadow Nightmare.
