Zack Snyder’s “Thoroughly Misunderstood” R-Rated Action “Masterpiece” Defies the Haters on Streaming

Look, I’ve always been a Zack Snyder fan, even when others haven’t quite gotten his vision. And I’m so excited to see Sucker Punch getting another chance! It was definitely a movie people didn’t understand at first, but it’s really grown on me – and a lot of other fans, too. With his bigger DC and Rebel Moon projects finished, it’s great to revisit one of his earlier films. It might not be as famous as 300 or Watchmen, but Sucker Punch really holds up, and its popularity on streaming proves it. It’s awesome to see more people discovering what we fans have known all along – it’s a really special movie!

Zack Snyder’s 2011 film, Sucker Punch, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, currently ranking as the 10th most-watched movie on HBO Max. This was Snyder’s first original screenplay, co-written with Steve Shibuya. The film stars Emily Browning as Babydoll, a young woman unjustly committed to a mental institution. Determined to escape, Babydoll discovers she can mentally transport herself to a fantastical world where she has power, and she uses this ability to plot her freedom. Here’s what the movie is about:

Babydoll, a young woman trapped in a difficult situation, escapes into a vivid fantasy world of her own creation. When she decides to fight for genuine freedom, she teams up with four other women – Rocket, Blondie, Amber, and Sweet Pea – to avoid a grim destiny. Armed with a variety of virtual weapons, the group battles fantastical enemies like samurai and snakes, all while grappling with the sacrifices they might have to make to survive.

As a fan, I absolutely love how much of Zack Snyder’s style is packed into Sucker Punch. It’s visually stunning – that signature grey and dark look he always uses is all over it. What’s really cool is the story lets the characters jump into totally different worlds, like going from World War 2 trenches to feudal Japan where samurai are wielding miniguns! The action is incredible, and when it’s all slowed down, it just feels like a classic Zack Snyder film. It’s a shame it didn’t click with everyone when it first came out, though.

‘Sucker Punch’ Has Certainly Got Better With Age

Warner Bros. Pictures

Released in 2011, Sucker Punch received largely negative reviews from both audiences and critics, earning a low 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This contributed to the film’s disappointing performance at the box office, where it earned just under $90 million worldwide. A major criticism focused on the film’s depiction of women, with many critics finding the portrayal of scantily clad female characters controlled by male guards to be sexist and overly focused on the male gaze.

Recently, viewers have started to see Sucker Punch as a story about female empowerment, interpreting it with a more critical and feminist perspective. Because of this, many now believe it’s Zack Snyder’s most overlooked film. One Rotten Tomatoes user commented, “Sucker Punch isn’t for everyone, but it’s truly unique and I think it’s been misinterpreted,” and another agreed.

“It’s one of my favorites & is in my opinion a Cinematic Masterpiece.”
