Yung Lean Kicks Off ‘Jonatan’ With “Forever Yung”

Swedish rapper Yung Lean has unveiled the first track from his upcoming album “Jonatan.” He initially announced the project towards the end of January, and now, he’s back with a sneak peek at the much-anticipated album. The lead single for this album is titled “Forever Yung,” and the full album will be out on May 2. This will mark his sixth studio album and his first solo album since the release of “Starz” in 2020.

Aidan Zamiri, known for working with Charli XCX and Billie Eilish, directed the music video for the track. This video showcases Yung Lean alongside his actual friends, including members of Sad Boys (Yung Sherman and Gud) as well as family and supporters. In August, Lean had shared a casting call on his social media, encouraging his followers to try out for roles in the music video during filming in Budapest. This led to more than 100 fans being recognized for their appearances, with some of them sporting vintage merchandise belonging to Lean.

In the opening scene of the video, Lean first greets his fans, giving away his watch to one fan and lighting a cigarette for another. However, an unexpected twist unfolds as he joins a group in loading a coffin into the back of a truck. The coffin contains Lean himself, appearing dead with a crown on his head. As the real Lean closes the coffin, he bids farewell to his fans, taking a bow before perching on top of the coffin and securing himself to the truck. This moving scene suggests the conclusion of an era for the rapper Yung Lean, a notion reinforced by the song’s title, “Forever Yung.” His lyrics encouraging listeners to remove their masks seem to align with the album’s title, Jonatan, which represents his legal name, Jonatan Leandoer, and the living part of himself in the video.

It seems that this song might mark the end of Yung Lean’s era, as it incorporates the Indie Folk and Art Pop styles he has been showcasing through his jonatan leandoer96 project since 2016. However, a fresh chapter for Yung Lean is upon us, with the album “Jonatan” set to be released in just a few months.
