Being the US ambassador to the UK is a challenging job, as shown in the first two seasons of the show The Diplomat. This season, a dangerous nuclear standoff between the UK, the US, and Russia is unfolding, but the most dramatic conflict actually happens within Kate Wyler’s personal life, specifically in her relationship with Hal, at the season’s end.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get more intense – even with the danger of nuclear war – a new development throws everything in The Diplomat into complete chaos.

Except, wait. This wouldn’t be The Diplomat if it didn’t end the season with a ginormous bombshell.

“Did the Russians take [Poseidon] or did you?” Kate asks Hal.

Hal attempts to dismiss Kate, but she won’t let it go. She accuses him of using her to deceive the Prime Minister and warns that if the British government discovers the truth, they’ll see it as an act of war.

“You can’t tell anyone,” Vice President Hal instructed Kate, before returning to Grace, who inquired if he was alright. “Not really,” Hal replied. “She knows.” ‘She’ refers to his wife.

The season concluded with a photographer exclaiming “Wonderful” – a bizarre moment, considering the two most influential people on Earth had just secretly taken a highly powerful nuclear weapon from the United Kingdom.

Considering what happened last season – the President’s death – this isn’t entirely unexpected. Plus, Hal hasn’t exactly built a reputation for being honest.

The really surprising thing is that Hal has always been reliable when it comes to Kate. He might bend the truth or act secretly sometimes, but he’s consistently been her biggest champion when she’s needed him most.

It would have been unimaginable to deceive Kate like this, using lies to make her participate in something so damaging. Especially now, considering she was prepared and eager for this very role.

Kate and Hal have had a rocky relationship, but this feels like the final blow, especially now that they’d finally made amends. It’s a completely new and devastating turn of events.

The foundation of The Diplomat has always been Kate’s faith in Hal. Now that that trust is shattered, the show is heading into a thrilling but complicated fourth season – one that might be its last. It’s hard to imagine the Wylers – or even the world – recovering from this, and the upcoming season will likely explore that fallout.
