YouTube TV is promising subscribers “more choice and flexibility” in their video plans next year.
Will it mean lower prices? That remains to be seen.
YouTube seems to be taking a similar path as traditional cable and satellite companies, offering smaller bundles of channels focused on specific interests – like sports – at a lower price.
Google announced on Wednesday that its platform will begin offering ten different subscription packages starting next year.
We want to give you more control over your subscription. You can continue with our standard YouTube TV plan, which includes over 100 channels, or choose a plan focused on sports, sports and news, or family entertainment. We’re making it easy to pick the option that fits your needs, the company explained.
No details were given on pricing.
The company announced a new sports package that will include popular channels like FS1, NBC Sports Network, and ESPN, as well as the major broadcast networks. This package is designed to compete with the combined Fox Sports and ESPN streaming services, which currently cost $39.99 per month.

After losing customers to streaming services, cable and satellite companies are now actively trying to win back those who’ve cancelled their subscriptions.
DirecTV, based in El Segundo, has been offering more affordable channel packages over the last year. These smaller options are for people who don’t want to pay for a lot of channels they don’t use. Now, customers can choose packages focused on specific interests – like news, sports, children’s programming, or Spanish-language content – which include both channels and streaming apps, all at a lower price.
YouTube TV is probably considering a new approach because it’s struggling with increasing costs for TV channels. The service has recently had difficult negotiations with major media companies like Comcast, TelevisaUnivision, Fox, and Disney.
As a movie and TV critic, I’ve been following the recent drama with streaming services, and it’s been a bit of a mess for some viewers. Last month, Disney pulled its channels – including ESPN – from YouTube TV for almost two weeks. And before that, YouTube TV subscribers lost access to Univision’s Spanish-language channels for a full two months! This isn’t just a consumer issue either; it actually got the attention of politicians from both sides of the aisle, which tells you how significant this disruption was.
YouTube TV launched in 2017 as a more affordable option to traditional cable and satellite TV. When it first came out, it cost $35 per month, but the price has since increased to $82.99.
Like traditional cable and satellite TV, the service is struggling with rising programming costs. As more people cut the cord, content providers are demanding higher fees to compensate for the shrinking customer base.
