YouTube partners with CAA to help celebrities manage digital likeness in AI content
As a seasoned cinemaphile with decades of observing the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood, I find myself both intrigued and cautious about these recent developments in AI technology. The collaboration between YouTube and Creative Artists Agency to protect the digital likenesses of actors and athletes is indeed a step forward in ensuring creative control and preventing unauthorized use. However, as someone who has witnessed the rise and fall of various trends in Tinseltown, I can’t help but remember the old adage: “Every new technology is indistinguishable from magic until it’s been used to make a bad movie.
On Tuesday, YouTube unveiled a collaboration with the Century City-based talent management company, Creative Artists Agency. This partnership aims to assist performers (actors and athletes) in effectively controlling how their physical appearance is used in artificial intelligence-generated content.
Starting next year, actors and sports personalities from the NBA and NFL will be given the ability to detect AI-created content on YouTube that uses their digital image, such as their faces, thanks to new technology. This will allow them to ask for its removal via a privacy complaint process if they so choose, according to YouTube’s statement.
The well-known video sharing service (belonging to the search titan Google) stated that this move is a component of a broader experiment aimed at refining its facial recognition technology.
Working together with CAA will provide us with valuable input from globally recognized thought leaders, many of whom have been greatly affected by recent advancements in AI technology. We’ll use this feedback to perfect our product before making it available to more creators and artists, as stated in a recent blog post by YouTube.

On Monday, OpenAI announced plans to make their disputed video-generation tool accessible to the general public, offering various subscription options.
In simple terms, YouTube plans to reveal more testing groups within the upcoming months, featuring prominent YouTube content creators and skilled creative artists.
Looking forward, we’re going to collaborate with CAA to empower artists and innovators, allowing them to explore the amazing capabilities of AI while still preserving their creative authority over their likeness. This collaboration signifies a substantial leap in our journey towards creating that future.” – YouTube CEO Neal Mohan in a statement.
Numerous individuals in Hollywood are voicing apprehensions over the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly its potential influence on employment and the remuneration of artists for AI’s use of their likenesses. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the widespread creation of deepfakes, such as misleading videos featuring celebrities endorsing or participating in activities that they never actually performed.

In the movie ‘Her,’ it wasn’t Joahnsson who supplied the voice for the AI assistant; instead, another actor was responsible, as confirmed by OpenAI.
This year, a digital voice named Sky, developed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, sparked debate. Actress Scarlett Johansson, represented by the Creative Artists Agency and famously known for her role as “Black Widow,” expressed concern that OpenAI might have utilized her voice in a demonstration without her explicit approval. OpenAI clarified they had used another actor’s voice instead but eventually removed it from public display.
“The Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has taken steps to safeguard its clients’ rights, such as introducing CAAvault last year, a system that analyzes clients’ physical features, tracks their actions, and vocal expressions to generate a digital replica of them. Clients who opt-in can create and claim ownership of their own digital counterparts. The agency foresees this initiative will shield its clients from copyright violations and empower talent to earn more income.
At present, the agency has chosen not to reveal the identities or quantity of their clients who will use the technology through their YouTube collaboration. It’s worth noting that some of CAA’s prominent clients are George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Nicole Kidman.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to express that at CAA, our AI discussions revolve around ethical considerations and the rights of talents. I commend YouTube for spearheading this talent-focused solution, as it resonates deeply with our objectives. We are honored to collaborate with YouTube on this momentous journey, as they assert their commitment to granting talents more control over their digital identity and where it is showcased.
