You’re too good! BBC chiefs twice rejected Amber Davies for Strictly because she’d starred in musicals – before her controversial last-minute replacement of fellow Love Island star Dani Dyer

Amber Davies, the recent last-minute addition to Strictly Come Dancing, was actually rejected by show officials twice in the past – surprisingly, because they thought she was *too* skilled a dancer.

Amidst growing controversy about her being cast, the Mail on Sunday reports that the West End performer had previously discussed the role with BBC executives, who felt her extensive dance background made her unsuitable.

Executives preferred celebrities who would learn to dance on the show, rather than hiring those with existing dance experience. They believed watching the learning process would be more appealing to viewers.

Ms Davies, 28, shot to fame on ITV’s Love Island in 2017, when she told viewers she was a dancer.

She trained in musical theatre at The Urdang Academy in London, earning a professional diploma.

By the end of 2021, at her last BBC meeting, she had spent most of 2019 performing as Judy Bernly in the West End production of 9 To 5: The Musical.

Last week, she was unexpectedly added to the Strictly Come Dancing cast to partner with Nikita Kuzmin. This happened after Dani Dyer, 29, had to withdraw from the competition due to a broken ankle.

Strictly Come Dancing producers now believe Ellie Davies’s previous dance experience could actually help her in the competition. They needed someone who could hit the ground running for last night’s live show, and Davies, who competed on Dancing On Ice last year, is now considered the frontrunner to win.

According to a source close to the show, Amber has been considered as a contestant twice previously. However, producers felt she was too skilled and didn’t fit the show’s format, which focuses on those with less experience.

‘Bosses know viewers enjoy watching a Strictly journey.

‘There would have been no journey with Amber because she was so amazing.’

The choice to cast her brings to mind the situation with Layton Williams, a musical theatre star who was a finalist on the show in 2023. However, a representative for Strictly Come Dancing stated they have no record of Ms. Davies ever being turned down in previous auditions.
