ITV executives have spent the week in tense discussions at their London offices, struggling with a difficult issue concerning Ed.
Ed Balls, a former Labour politician known for his left-leaning views and currently a host on Good Morning Britain, has once again created a problem for the show’s management.
Insiders at the network say leaders are deeply worried and have hired a specialist public relations company to manage a difficult situation created by a controversial figure – a move that’s unusual for them.
The television host is facing criticism after an interview last Monday with an activist campaigning against anti-Semitism. The interview led to accusations that the host himself was anti-Semitic and generated a significant number of complaints. Sources say the host, known internally as ‘Red Ed’ at ITV, was called in by executives and told his line of questioning was inappropriate.
Okay, so I was watching GMB, right? And this amazing author, Dov Forman, was being interviewed after that horrible arson attack on the ambulance fleet – can you believe someone would do that?! Anyway, this presenter, Ed Balls, just completely blindsided him! Forman was there, at the scene in Golders Green, with all the emergency vehicles behind him, clearly shaken up, and Balls asks him if he’d condemn intolerance against Muslims! Like, seriously? At that moment? It felt so…off. It just didn’t seem right to put that question to him then, when he was already dealing with this awful attack on his community. I was yelling at the TV, honestly!
Balls asked Dov if he agreed that the recent criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan for publicly praying as part of a Muslim group – specifically, comments made by Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy calling it inappropriate – mirrored the kind of intolerance fueling issues within the Jewish community. He then asked if Dov would also condemn Timothy’s remarks.
For 22-year-old Forman, setting a fire and simply disagreeing with public prayer were completely different things – he didn’t see them as comparable at all.
The anti-Semitism activist strongly urged everyone to keep the conversation centered on anti-Semitism, not get sidetracked by other political arguments. This led to complaints, and ITV quickly apologized.
Ed Balls, whose wife Yvette Cooper is the Foreign Secretary, was reprimanded by ITV bosses who told him to focus on presenting rather than acting like a politician. Sources say this incident has frustrated Andrew Dagnell, ITV’s Director of News, who was already closely monitoring Balls for any signs of political bias in his interviews. Dagnell was so worried about Balls’ comments that he organized a meeting with Karen Newman, from the Jewish Board of Deputies, and other leaders of the Jewish community. Representatives from ITV’s Jewish staff, who had raised concerns, were also present. The meeting is described as being both tense and productive.
According to a source present, Ed mistakenly seemed to associate the interviewee, Forman, with politicians who had recently advocated for banning Muslim Ramadan prayers. The source emphasized that as a presenter, Ed cannot display any political bias, and this incident could create problems.
According to a source, Ed acknowledged the interview didn’t come across as he intended. He also recognized a lack of tolerance towards minority religions and admitted he handled the interview poorly.
However, a source pointed out that it was a rapidly developing news story, and Dov was only confirmed as a guest that morning. This didn’t give the presenters, including Ed and Susanna Reid, much time to prepare.
Rather than simply listening to a young Jewish man share his reactions and worries about the recent, awful anti-Semitic incident in the community, Ed seemed to have his own agenda and wanted to discuss other matters with Forman.
An insider at ITV has revealed that Ed Balls has been directly told by senior executives to stop using his position on Good Morning Britain to promote his personal political views.
Sources report that Ed Balls’ appearances on the show have created tension at home. Apparently, his wife of 27 years wasn’t pleased with his performance last week, as any controversy surrounding him reflects on her as well. According to an insider, Yvette doesn’t want people questioning her husband’s political leanings while he’s hosting ‘Good Morning Britain’.
As someone who keeps a close eye on public figures, I’m hearing that Yvette and Ed are truly bothered by the reaction to his recent interview. Those close to them tell me they’ve always been strong supporters of the Jewish community – they’re regularly at communal events and are genuinely considered friends by many within it. It’s clear they didn’t intend to cause any offense.
Honestly, the very last thing either of these people would ever want to do is harm a community I really look up to – especially right now, when they’re facing such a worrying increase in anti-Semitism. It genuinely breaks my heart to think anyone could contribute to that kind of pain for them.
Okay, so you might have noticed some pretty pointed questions from Ed Balls recently. The reason? Well, it turns out the person he was questioning, Forman, actually works as an advisor for Robert Jenrick, who’s with Reform UK. As someone who used to be a Labour MP myself, I can tell you that’s a connection that’s bound to ruffle some feathers – it naturally brings a bit of tension to the conversation!
As expected, Jenrick quickly described the interview as ‘very disturbing’ and criticized Balls, saying he clearly didn’t understand the situation.
This isn’t the first time Rob Beckett has faced criticism since becoming part of the ITV program. Earlier in 2024, he received complaints and was accused of showing favoritism when he interviewed his wife on air. The interview happened shortly after the Southport riots, and as the then-Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper was under scrutiny – but viewers felt it was inappropriate for her husband to be the one questioning her. An agreement was made after the incident that he would no longer interview her on the show.
I’ve noticed a lot of people are saying he can be really aggressive when interviewing people from Reform UK, like Richard Tice and Nigel Farage. It seems like he often talks over his guests and comes across as a bit of a bully, which honestly, many viewers – myself included – find really unprofessional and off-putting. It just doesn’t feel like fair debate when it’s happening.
More criticism arose after interviews and political debates with Labour representatives, with some claiming he was prioritizing his wife’s career and being too lenient towards figures like Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
Despite everything else, a source close to the show revealed that producers appreciate the political discussions Ed sparks and the unique perspective he offers.
It’s also worth noting he’s not just a former Member of Parliament; he previously worked as a journalist, and was a leading economics writer for the Financial Times.
Ultimately, Piers Morgan is bringing in a lot of viewers for Good Morning Britain, which means he’s succeeding in some way. However, the show’s executives are hoping he avoids similar controversial behavior in the future.
