You Won’t Believe Why Andor Is So Amazing

Without a doubt, the general agreement is clear: Tony Gilroy, the genius behind “Andor,” has undeniably crafted an outstanding Season 2 for the cherished “Star Wars” franchise. It’s now evident why this series reached such unprecedented heights… and why Gilroy was unquestionably the ideal candidate to lead it.

Since the release of Episode IV, Star Wars has consistently captivated audiences with its exceptional films and TV series. Notable standouts include The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Rebels. Now, the highly-acclaimed series Andor has joined their ranks in the franchise’s top tier, with some critics even hailing it as “Star Wars at its finest.” By steering clear of lightsaber duels and Force powers, creator Tony Gilroy crafted a gritty, realistic narrative about revolutionaries living under oppressive political rule. This storyline effectively highlights the political themes that have always been central to the Star Wars universe.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, the showrunner emphasized that the creation of Andor was the result of long-held fascinations with intriguing earthly histories.

Tony Gilroy Channelled Forty Years of Historical Interests into Andor

From as early as George Lucas’ involvement in the original Star Wars trilogy, it has been inherently political. The narrative explores themes of conflict and suppression, and the Empire, with its actions and visual style, is clearly a totalitarian regime.

In the world of Star Wars, with its epic lightsaber duels, space battles, and exotic creatures, political implications might get overshadowed. But in the show Andor, which focuses on an anti-fascist resistance, these themes are never lost – they’re always front and center.

Gilroy excels at navigating these waters due to a lifetime passion for studying the very historical conflicts that occur here. In his words, taking on Andor was like putting into practice the self-taught knowledge he’d amassed over four decades about history.

For years, various historical events such as the Russian Revolution, the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, figures like Oliver Cromwell and Zapata, had been swirling around in my mind. I didn’t know where to channel this knowledge until I was offered a chance to create a show that spans over five years, focusing on a revolution and the people involved in it. What an amazing opportunity!

Gilroy boasts over four decades of delving into some of the most significant and groundbreaking revolutions in human history. This deep-seated enthusiasm and knowledge offers an understanding of the pitfalls and challenges faced during a revolution, encompassing grand strategic moves as well as the intricate details and interconnected choices that sustain revolutionaries on a daily basis.

Maintaining the narrative tightly centered around the characters’ struggles while skillfully weaving in complex details helped craft an extraordinarily lifelike, nuanced, and insightful collection of stories that took place in a distant galaxy, making it one of the most memorable series from its time.
