You Won’t Believe Where These Stars Were Before The Righteous Gemstones
The television series “The Righteous Gemstones,” airing on HBO, follows a notoriously religious family of televangelists. Premiered in 2019, the show is now in its fourth and final season, boasting a talented cast including Danny McBride, Adam DeVine, Walton Goggins, John Goodman, and Edi Patterson. Their on-screen family dynamics offer uproarious humor through themes like corporate greed and hidden personal secrets. Prior to the conception of “The Righteous Gemstones,” Walton Goggins and Danny McBride had previously collaborated on another side-splitting comedy.
The series “Vice Principals” centers around two scheming vice principals, portrayed by Walton Goggins and Danny McBride, who join forces in a turbulent power struggle to secure the position of principal at North Jackson High School. Similar to “The Righteous Gemstones,” this show is filled with uproarious, over-the-top humor that is interwoven with profound character development. Goggins and McBride depict Neal and Lee, rivals with a friendly enmity who are both vying for the same position. The onscreen chemistry between them is spot-on. “Vice Principals” is also another fruit of collaboration between Jody Hill and McBride under their production company, Rough House Pictures. Over the years, the comedy style of McBride and Hill has evolved from multiple films and a past television show, making “Vice Principals” another excellent addition to their collection of comedic masterpieces.
Walton Goggins and Danny McBride Have Perfect Chemistry in Vice Principals
In my humble opinion, “Vice Principals” is a rollercoaster ride through the turbulent world of power struggles and chaos, set in the halls of North Jackson High School. As the story unfolds, we find ourselves following Neal Gamby (played brilliantly by Danny McBride), who believes he’s destined for the principal position due to his tough-as-nails approach as vice principal. However, the reality of ruling with an iron fist isn’t quite as appealing as he imagined.
Enter Lee Russell (portrayed masterfully by Walton Goggins), who immediately declares war on Neal upon the principal’s resignation to care for his ailing wife. From there, the two engage in a battle of wits, each trying to outmaneuver the other until Dr. Belinda Brown is appointed as the new head of the school.
Neal’s fury knows no bounds at this unexpected turn of events, while Lee, ever the cunning strategist, feigns friendliness to devise deceitful strategies against Brown. The tension between these two rivals is palpable and keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Danny McBride has been a significant comedic force in Hollywood for more than twenty years, yet he frequently found himself sidelined because he took on smaller roles in larger comedy ensembles. However, his star began to shine with the release of his film “A Foot Fist Way” and his show “Eastbound and Down“. McBride has consistently combined acting with contributing creatively to projects that resonate with him. Notably, he was involved in revitalizing the renowned “Halloween” franchise. Prior to his current successes, he portrayed Neal Gamby, a no-nonsense vice principal who led a rather messy personal life. McBride meticulously designed the two seasons of “Vice Principals“, making it resemble more of a two-season miniseries.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share my take on how McBride assumed a pivotal role and envisioned Walton Goggins as his co-star. Goggins had earlier tried for the part in Eastbound and Down, but missed the cut after reading with McBride. However, McBride was so captivated by Goggins’ audition that he held on to the memory of it. Notably, Goggins had showcased his acting prowess in various complex roles, yet comedy was relatively unexplored in them. When McBride eventually cast Goggins as Lee, the latter quickly molded the character by adopting a unique voice that would become synonymous with Lee’s persona.
Vice Principals Balances the Obscenely Comedic Tone With Its Darker, Dramatic Tone
The TV show “Vice Principals” features eccentric personalities, humorous dialogue, and absurd situations that leave viewers in stitches. However, the humor originates from the shadows of struggle faced by Neal and Lee. Neal grapples with the loss of his daughter to his ex-wife and her new spouse. Lee craves power as he has none at home due to living with his mother-in-law, who requires significant care from him and his wife. Danny McBride, reflecting on the main characters, shared insights about them.
It’s understandable that Neal and Lee often clash with others, including staff, students, and even the North Jackson High School community at large. Their behavior generally irritates the staff, the students find them unpalatable, and the community tends to avoid them. Given this context, it becomes clearer why the antagonistic duo of Neal and Lee are ready to go to extreme lengths, such as contaminating water with drugs or arson against the principal’s house, to advance in life. Although the behavior of Neal and Lee stems from their misdirected anger towards their own lives, their actions are consistently over-the-top and outlandish, making for a perfect blend of situational humor.
Vice Principals Features the Unique Vision of Jody Hill and Danny McBride
The show “Vice Principals” represents a humoristic continuation following the collaboration of Jody Hill and Danny McBride, who previously worked together on the series “Eastbound and Down”. Their partnership began with the film “A Foot Fist Way”, and since then, they have consistently collaborated. As their comedy-making skills blossomed, they invited David Gordon Green to join them and established Rough House Pictures, a production company based in Charleston, South Carolina. From this base, they went on to produce multiple movies and concocted some of the most innovative television comedies. McBride aimed to create his comedy series with distinctive characters that offer comedic aspects but also grapple with genuine emotional struggles.
Observe and Report showcases a security guard who goes to great lengths to prove himself. A Foot Fist Way follows a martial artist seeking to regain his self-worth after his wife’s infidelity. In the same vein, both Eastbound & Down and The Righteous Gemstones depict family lives centered around a complex character portrayed by Danny McBride. Among these works, Vice Principals stands out due to its daring comedy and offering compassion towards the characters despite their troubles. Like the others, it delivers plenty of laughs in absurd situations arising from the misfortunes of the lead characters. Hill and McBride’s production company consistently challenges audiences by creating comedies that may appear amusing but often conceal underlying sadness.
In recent times, Walton Goggins has been appearing in a multitude of shows in 2025, more than most actors. He’s set to reprise his role as Ghoul/Cooper Howard in “Fallout” slated for 2026. Currently, he can be seen on “Invincible,” was part of the latest season of “The White Lotus,” and is wrapping up the final season of “The Righteous Gemstones” playing Baby Billy Freeman, opposite Danny McBride’s Jesse Gemstone. Similarly, every role McBride takes on sees him bringing a unique emotional depth to what will likely be a hilarious character. With Rough House Productions always striving to innovate in comedy, we can expect some fantastic films and series post the conclusion of “The Righteous Gemstones.
Lately, “Vice Principals” has re-emerged as a popular show on Max’s streaming charts. Meanwhile, as McBride ponders over the last season of “The Righteous Gemstones,” he shared his thoughts…
Despite being nearly a decade since its initial airing, it’s astounding that “Vice Principals” continues to draw new viewers. The humor between Neal and Lee remains just as side-splitting. The characters’ willingness to go to extreme lengths for their desires is still equally awkward and captivating. The reimagined buddy comedy style harmonizes beautifully with the show’s strong ensemble of supporting characters. Initially, McBride and Goggins were relatively unknown, but they’ve since become cornerstones in the entertainment world.
