You Won’t Believe How Rhydonium Fuels Star Wars Rebels and Powers Explosive Rebellion Secrets!
As Season 2 progresses, it’s heading purposefully towards the happenings depicted in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. The titular character, Cassian Andor, has taken up a leadership role under Luthen Rael within the rebellion now. However, it’s important to note that Cassian isn’t the only rebel with his own storyline. The series has recently introduced other rebels like Bix Caleen and Wilmon Paak, individuals who were acquainted with him on Ferrix and managed an escape from the planet at the end of Season 1. Additionally, the show highlights various rebel groups, such as Saw Gerrera’s Partisans, who resurfaced in the latest episodes with a mission to pilfer a material called rhydonium. This substance might sound familiar to some “Star Wars” enthusiasts.
In the second season of Andor, during episodes 4 and 5, Luthen dispatches Wilmon to instruct someone on the operation of a device that pulls out rhydonium for an impending robbery. However, when Wilmon is teaching this individual, it turns out to be an Imperial spy. As a result, Saw enlists Wilmon for the mission instead. Although Saw discusses the substance at length, detailing its hazardous properties and his admiration for it, he never explicitly reveals what it is. Here’s all you need to know about rhydonium and its significant role in the Star Wars universe’s history.
Rhydonium Has Been Powering Starships in the Star Wars Galaxy for Ages
Where Rhydonium Appears in Star Wars
Rhydonium, or simply “rhydo”, is a notorious substance recognized for its explosively volatile characteristics. As Saw describes in the series Andor, this is an extraordinarily hazardous material. Breathing in its vapors could potentially harm one’s vocal cords and likely other internal organs as well. Skin contact with rhydonium can cause burns, and prolonged exposure may lead to brain damage. What makes it even more alarming is that Saw seems to find its scent appealing. Due to the risk of detonation from even minor disruptions, transporting rhydonium is extremely challenging. Some individuals have even started using it as a bomb rather than just fuel because of this difficulty.
Star Wars books that feature rhydonium:
- The High Republic: Midnight Horizon
- The High Republic: The Edge of Balance: Premonition
- Choose Your Destiny: A Han & Chewie Adventure
- The Princess and the Scoundrel
- Rey’s Survival Guide
As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the intriguing introduction and evolution of Rhydonium throughout the galaxy. This powerful fuel source made its debut during the High Republic era, where it was already being utilized as an energy source. Since then, it has graced numerous books, comics, TV shows, and even found a prominent role in some pivotal episodes.
In “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” Season 5, Episode 12, “Missing in Action,” Separatists attempted to destroy a Republic cruiser using Rhydonium, but their plans were thwarted by R2-D2 and the D-Squad. In the same universe, Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren employed canisters of Rhydonium to blow up attacking fyrnocks in “Star Wars Rebels” Season 1, Episode 7, “Out of Darkness.”
More recently, in “The Mandalorian” Season 2, Episode 7, Din Djarin and Migs Mayfeld hijacked a truck carrying Rhydonium to infiltrate an Imperial refinery. After successfully defending the truck from local pirates, Mayfeld later used the Rhydonium to destroy the refinery.
Now, the latest addition to the Star Wars saga, “Andor,” delves deeper into the intimate connection between Saw and his starship’s fuel source – you guessed it, Rhydonium!
Saw Gerrera Turns Rhydonium Into More Than an Explosive Fuel
Andor Reveals Saw’s History With Rhydonium
In “I Have Friends Everywhere,” the fifth episode of Andor Season 2, Saw recounts his past as a young prisoner forced to mine rhydonium on Onderon. During a leak incident, everyone else evacuated, but he remained and was exposed to the hazardous substance. This exposure may have sparked his unique connection with rhydo, referring to it as his sister who loves him deeply and supposedly comprehends it better than others. It’s plausible that during the Clone Wars, Saw used the fumes as a means of dealing with the loss of his sister. The other members of his group might also share this affinity, as Saw’s eloquence prompts Wilmon to discard his mask and breathe in the fumes, potentially winning him over to Saw’s cause. While rhydonium is primarily used for fuel and explosives in Andor, Saw seems to regard it more like a drug.
It’s intriguing that Saw compares rhydonium to himself and other revolutionaries, pointing out their shared volatile nature and potential role as the rebellion’s fuel. Just like fans are aware that Saw meets his end in Rogue One, he seems to accept that he may not witness the Empire’s demise personally. Interestingly, he also hints at a potential early demise for Wilmon in Andor. Despite the somber tone, Saw finds a sense of beauty in the notion that their sacrifices will contribute to the rebellion’s success and eventually bring about the Empire’s fall. It’s also plausible that his frequent use of rhydo, made possible by Wilmon and the extractor, could explain why he needs a breathing device in Rogue One.
