You Won’t Believe How Many Marvel Roles Nathan Fillion Has Played!

Deadpool and Wolverine significantly reshaped the narrative landscape of the Multiverse Saga, offering fans an enticing glimpse into what awaits when Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are released in 2026 and 2027 respectively. The movie Deadpool & Wolverine finds Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) trapped in the Void, beyond the reaches of time, where they cross paths with a ruthless warlord, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), and her legion of malevolent mutants who serve her commands.

While navigating the Void, Deadpool and Wolverine come across numerous well-known Marvel characters, with their original actors returning to portray them. Characters such as Dafne Keen’s X-23, Wesley Snipes’s Blade, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and Chris Evans’s Human Torch are among these figures. However, the film also features several hidden cameos that are just as enjoyable as the fan service in Deadpool & Wolverine‘s second half. In the ultimate showdown on Wade’s home planet, they face a multitude of Deadpool versions called the Deadpool Corps. Many of these versions were voiced by popular actors like Blake Lively and Matthew McConaughey. One particular Deadpool variant, a head without a body named Headpool, was given voice by Nathan Fillion, who may not be immediately recognized, as he has portrayed four distinct characters within the MCU.

Who Does Nathan Fillion Play In The MCU?

Fillion Portrayed Multiple Characters Across the Marvel Universe

Besides Stan Lee, Nathan Fillion is the actor who has portrayed the most characters across the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While none of his roles are primary figures within the MCU, Fillion still commands a commendable place within the franchise.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

In the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appearance of Nathan Fillion, he lends his voice to a menacing inmate who taunts Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” film. Despite not being physically present, Fillion’s character is heard delivering chilling lines as the fearsome alien convict vividly details his plans for Star-Lord. Regrettably for the inmate, Groot and Rocket don’t respond kindly to his threats and retaliate against him in front of the entire prison population. From that moment forward, Fillion’s unnamed character avoids any further confrontations with the Guardians.

Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2

Nathan Fillion, a regular partner of director James Gunn, graces the screen again, this time in a deleted scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In this scene, Fillion can be seen in a string of posters advertising a Simon Williams film festival. One poster features Williams portraying Tony Stark, the billionaire playboy philanthropist, in a biopic. In the comics, Simon Williams is a renowned actor who transforms into the superhero Wonder Man. This hidden reference could have paved the way for Fillion to take on a more significant role as a superhero within the MCU. However, this scene was omitted from the final version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the part of Simon Williams was eventually given to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is slated to debut as Wonder Man in his own Disney+ series.

Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 3

In this latest venture, Nathan Fillion takes on a more significant role than his previous Guardians of the Galaxy appearances. Unlike before, where he was merely making brief cameos, Fillion now shares screen time with the main cast in multiple scenes. The actor portrays Master Karja, the head of security at the Orgoscope – a science center engineered by the High Evolutionary. Master Karja encounters the Guardians when they sneak into the space station but fails to apprehend them for his superior. Later, he assists in interrogating Fitz-Gibbonok, a Ravager who aided the Guardians’ escape, only to be shocked as Adam Warlock executes the prisoner. The character of Master Karja does not appear again in the movie after this scene.

Deadpool & Wolverine

In my humble opinion as a cinephile, Nathan Fillion lends his distinctive voice once more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. In this outing, he embodies the enigmatic Headpool – a character you might not expect to see, but one that certainly leaves an impression. Headpool, essentially a disembodied skull equipped with a propeller on its cranium, dons a tattered Deadpool mask, making it one of the film’s more intriguing characters from the Deadpool Corps.

In the movie’s thrilling finale, Headpool and his fellow Deadpool variants engage in an intense battle alongside Deadpool and Wolverine. However, when the charming Peter (Rob Delaney) makes an appearance, the Deadpool variants, including Headpool, are momentarily captivated. They find themselves unable to resist Peter’s allure, allowing Wade and Logan to slip away unscathed. A delightful twist in a film filled with them!

Nathan Fillion’s Other Superhero Roles, Explained

The Actor Has Played Parts in Both Marvel and DC Properties

Nathan Fillion boasts an extensive career spanning numerous superhero-themed productions, with stints in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being just one aspect. Beyond his screen time in the MCU, he lent his voice to Simon Williams, better known as Wonder Man, on the Hulu animated series “Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.” This brief appearance mirrors his original part in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” and it also references this role as a highly sought-after fan choice online.

Although some spectators might recall Fillion for his guest appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has taken on more significant roles within DC Studios. One of his most recognized performances is voicing Hal Jordan/Green Lantern across four movies, following Christopher Meloni who originally played the role but had to leave it. Lately, Fillion appeared in the introductory scene of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” portraying Cory Pizner, also known as T.D.K., “The Detachable Kid.

Despite meeting a tragic end early on in his debut within The Suicide Squad, actor Fillion will get another chance to breathe life into a renowned DC Comics character next year, with the eagerly awaited Superman film. Specifically, he’ll portray Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the movie, paving the way for a more substantial role within the franchise going forward.

Prior to his portrayal as Guy Gardner, Fillion was widely favored for the part of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern film. However, the role ended up being given to Ryan Reynolds. Now, Fillion has another opportunity to play a superhero, albeit a different character who wields the ring.

In a significant leap for Nathan Fillion’s career in live-action superhero roles, his portrayal of Guy Gardner will be his most expansive appearance to date within a superhero franchise. This upcoming project will make him part of the third major superhero film series featuring the talented actor. For viewers, this new role promises a greater spotlight on Nathan Fillion compared to his previous superhero-themed projects.
