You Won’t Believe How Long These 30 Disney Classics Actually Are!
Over the course of its lengthy history, Disney has been responsible for creating some of the most renowned, impactful, and highly-regarded animated films in cinema’s illustrious history, cementing its place among pop culture legends. Although some Disney animated films can seem quite lengthy, Studio MAPPA’s In This Corner of the World holds the record for the longest animated movie ever made, with a runtime stretching to 168 minutes in its extended version.
Compared to most movies, Disney animations like the first one, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” are relatively short, clocking in at approximately 83 minutes. This is likely due to young audiences’ limited attention spans and Disney’s focus on creating animated films suitable for children. In fact, it’s uncommon for Disney movies to exceed two hours in length. However, some Disney productions might still be perceived as ‘long,’ but only one breaks the two-hour mark.
Runtime: 88 Minutes
Among Disney’s films, none have experienced the extraordinary popularity that The Lion King did – an imaginative reworking of Hamlet, played out amidst the African savanna’s animal denizens. I was just a cub when Simba, the young lion prince, was crowned king in this tale, unaware of the challenges ahead. His father is tragically killed by his villainous uncle, forcing him into exile. However, life has a way of teaching us lessons, and Simba learns to rediscover himself, right wrongs, and ultimately reclaim his throne. Elton John and Tim Rice’s enchanting melodies became the soundtrack of our childhood memories, while the movie itself gave birth to sequels, live-action adaptations, a Broadway musical, and numerous other spin-offs. A whole generation grew up with this timeless story, and James Earl Jones’s powerful portrayal of King Mufasa undeniably left an indelible mark on his illustrious acting career.
As a passionate cinephile, I must admit that while watching “The Lion King,” I couldn’t help but notice the buzz it stirred up among viewers. It’s an extraordinary feat, being Disney’s second completely original animated script since 1990’s “The Rescuers Down Under.” However, I can’t ignore the striking resemblances many manga and anime enthusiasts have pointed out between this film and the “Kimba the White Lion” series from the ’50s. Regardless of any formal acknowledgment from Disney, “The Lion King” continues to shine as one of their most iconic masterpieces and a pinnacle achievement during the Renaissance era.
Runtime: 90 Minutes
1992’s “Aladdin” remains iconic in my mind for its enchanted lamp, a symbol of the magic that permeated throughout the film. The animation was instrumental in capturing the quick-witted humor and improvisation that Aladdin exhibited, proving that voice acting is not just a supporting role, but a crucial component of storytelling. Notably, “Aladdin” marked the final collaboration between the late Howard Ashman and Disney, a partnership that significantly contributed to the Disney Renaissance with their creative songs.
Regrettably, despite its abundance of thrilling action sequences and an engaging fairy-tale narrative, the movie unfortunately perpetuates several outdated Middle Eastern stereotypes. These detract from what could have been a vibrant and lively production. The 2019 reboot, starring Will Smith as the Genie, attempts to rectify this issue.
Runtime: 91 Minutes
Initially, it might seem that Victor Hugo’s work, such as “Les Misérables,” is unsuitable for a lively musical production. However, the unexpected success of “Les Misérables” on stage paved the way for a reimagined, family-friendly adaptation of another one of Hugo’s timeless works – “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Remarkably, the story aligns well with the Disney-like character of the deformed bell ringer in this tale.
Indeed, unlike Hugo, it concludes in a more optimistic manner, aligning with Disney’s tendency to soften the grittier aspects of their adapted stories. However, it maintains an intricate depth and gloominess that mirrors the harsh realities of racism and its connection to religious beliefs. Navigating such sensitive themes amidst charming companions and numerous musical numbers is a remarkable feat, allowing the film to thrive in its unique context without compromising Hugo’s core message.
Runtime: 93 Minutes
During the Golden Age, Disney occasionally explored classical mythology, with standout examples including the famous segment of Fantasia and short films such as “The Goddess of Spring“, which recounts the tale of Persephone. The feature-length animated musical Hercules was another significant addition to this mix, offering a musical adaptation of the son of Zeus and contributing significantly to the Disney Renaissance. Furthermore, it marked the initial steps towards diversifying genres for the animation division of Disney.
Without a doubt, James Woods’ portrayal of Hades, the slick-tongued swindler, steals the show. He’s won over many fans, joining an ensemble of powerful songs and a visually stunning, classically influenced style that distinguishes it from other Disney films of the period. Regrettably, a sequel never materialized, but the movie spawned a popular animated television series and a stage adaptation. For quite some time now, Disney has been working on a live-action remake, with Guy Ritchie currently set to direct.
Runtime: 95 Minutes
Follows the journey of young Asha (Ariana DeBose), who experiences unexpected consequences after making a wish on a star and causing it to descend from heaven. The playful star tags along with Asha as she strives to uncover King Magnifico’s malicious intentions, the ruler of Rosas, who is also determined to seize control of the celestial being.
The actors in this production are Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, and Harvey Guillen. Moreover, it was the winner of the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Film in 2024. Interestingly, it was heavily advertised as Disney’s animated movie debuting on their 100th anniversary in 2023, which made its runtime slightly longer than usual animated films.
Runtime: 95 Minutes
Treasure Planet represents a science-fiction reinterpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless 1883 novel, Treasure Island. The story follows Jim Hawkins, an energetic explorer who discovers a treasure map that belonged to a legendary space pirate. His journey leads him to the mythical “Treasure Planet,” where he learns that John Silver, a cyborg, is also chasing after the same treasure.
Initially intended to launch a new series for Disney, the movie struggled at the box office due to fierce competition from films like “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “The Santa Clause 2,” and “Die Another Day.” Despite this rocky start, it has since gained cult status and its popularity continues to grow beyond what was initially expected. Fans continue to hold out hope for a sequel in the future.
Runtime: 95 Minutes
The movie, titled “Meet the Robinsons“, narrates the story of an inventive orphan named Lewis, who has unsuccessfully attempted to find suitable adoptive parents due to his peculiar inventions and quirky personality. On a fateful day, he encounters Wilbur Robinson, a time-traveler, and they embark on a journey to the year 2037, where Lewis gets acquainted with Wilbur’s family. Together, they endeavor to thwart the nefarious Bowler Hat Guy and alter their future destinies.
Despite poor box office performances, the movie generally garnered positive criticism. Plans for a straight-to-video follow-up were scrapped in 2007 following Disney’s decision to halt production on all direct-to-video sequels. Remarkably, the characters from this film remain popular even 15 years after their debut, with some making appearances in Disney’s centennial anniversary short, “Once Upon a Studio.
Runtime: 96 Minutes
In the movie titled “Bolt,” John Travolta voices the role of a dog named Bolt who has spent years living on television sets and believes he possesses superpowers. When Bolt thinks his co-star is kidnapped, he embarks on a long journey across the country to rescue her. Along the way, he meets a sarcastic cat and a clever hamster, who join him in his mission to reunite with his costar. The voice cast features Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, Malcolm McDowell, and James Lipton.
Despite not spawning any sequels, the movie “Bolt” played a pivotal role in Disney’s success, serving as a turning point for their CGI projects. It set a precedent for future productions, and films like “Tangled” and “Frozen”, which became some of Disney’s most successful titles in the 2010s, were positively influenced by it.
Runtime: 96 Minutes
The movie titled “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” is relatively brief compared to many other Disney films, lasting just 96 minutes. It falls into a genre that’s somewhat between “The Little Mermaid” and “Treasure Planet,” making it a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, albeit one that didn’t receive much praise when it debuted in 2001. Featuring the voice talents of Leonard Nimoy, James Garner, and Michael J. Fox, this Disney production was met with severe criticism for its storyline lacking clear structure and underdeveloped characters.
On one side, some critics appreciated the finale for its thrilling action scenes, despite finding the rest of the film less powerful compared to the climax. Additionally, this film has developed a cult following over the years, gaining fans even though it didn’t perform well financially upon release.
Runtime: 97 Minutes
In a delightful retelling, “The Princess and the Frog” transports audiences to 1920s New Orleans, where we meet Tiana, an ambitious waitress with dreams of owning her own restaurant one day. On her journey, she encounters Prince Naveen, who, after sharing a kiss, finds herself transformed into a frog. With Naveen by her side, they embark on a quest to reverse the spell and return to their human forms. Anika Noni Rose and Bruno Campos lend their voices to these captivating characters.
For the first time in 16 years, this movie became a hit, making it Disney’s most successful animated film since “Lilo & Stitch” was released back then. Its popularity continues to thrive, and Splash Mountain rides at Disney theme parks have been rebranded as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
Runtime: 100 Minutes
2016’s “Moana” became an immediate hit for Disney and quickly established itself as a timeless classic upon release. However, it was unexpected when news broke in 2020 about a potential TV series sequel instead of a second film like other successful Disney productions. This decision, coming at a time when the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and the future of movie theaters remains uncertain, seems to speak volumes.
This year, the box office is making quite a noise, similar to a mighty lion’s roar. What began as a TV series has been expanded into a movie sequel. Despite the continued appeal of the characters and animation, the narrative seems to lack the clarity and momentum that the initial film had. The movie spans an hour and forty minutes, which is common for contemporary Disney animated productions.
Runtime: 100 minutes
Disney’s film “Tangled” presents a fresh take on the traditional Brothers Grimm tale of “Rapunzel,” where the story concludes with Rapunzel giving birth to twins. In this version, Rapunzel is confined in a towering abode until she crosses paths with Flynn Rider. Together, they set off on an adventure that allows Rapunzel to discover the world and uncover her past.
Tangled skillfully combines different story elements such as adventure, action, humor, and romance, resulting in an enjoyable tale suitable for all ages. Notably, it received a nomination for Best Original Song at the Oscars. With a runtime of 100 minutes, it’s perfect for a casual movie night, often referred to as a popcorn flick. Despite being over a decade old, Tangled remains popular and is expected to receive a live-action remake, following the trend set by numerous other Disney animated films.
Runtime: 101 minutes
In the movie called “Wreck-It Ralph,” the main character, who is usually considered a villain in typical arcade games, is presented as a hero instead. Despite facing resistance from all sides, Ralph strives to change his image and show his kind heart. It’s a tale of redemption that Disney does exceptionally well.
The delightful movie “Wreck-It Ralph” earned almost half a billion dollars at the box office, which was three times more than its production cost. If not for Pixar’s “Brave,” “Wreck-It Ralph” would probably have taken home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It’s worth noting that “Ralph Breaks the Internet” runs for about 112 minutes, which is around eleven minutes longer than its original version.
Runtime: 102 minutes
The film “Frozen” draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s tale “The Snow Queen,” although it strays significantly from traditional fairy tales. Upon its debut, it garnered near-unanimous praise, earning comparisons to classics like “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.” In contrast to earlier Disney Princess movies, “Frozen” quickly became a massive success.
The movie “Frozen” is nearly flawless among Western animated films, boasting impressive voice talent, stunning graphics, and an unforgettable soundtrack. It ultimately earned the Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature, along with numerous other esteemed awards. Interestingly, “Frozen” runs one minute shorter than its sequel, “Frozen II”.
Runtime: 102 minutes
For some spectators, the animated film Encanto might seem like a less intense version compared to Pixar’s 2017 hit, Coco. But Disney managed to give the Madrigal family their unique storytelling style, turning the movie into an enchanting tale emphasizing familial bonds. Furthermore, the movie is often praised as one of the most exceptional animated films produced recently.
Initially, the movie Encanto didn’t immediately become a success, but Lin-Manuel Miranda’s original songs soon took off on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, propelling Encanto into a cultural sensation. The vibrant animation style garnered additional acclaim, and its theme about love, sacrifice, and family makes it an appropriate film for viewers of all ages. In just 102 minutes, audiences are left with barely enough time to savor the charm of Encanto, yet they still manage to fall in love with the Madrigal family.
Runtime: 102 minutes
In the world of Big Hero 6, I find myself at the heart of a tale spun around Hiro Hamada, a brilliant young tech whiz and his affectionate healthcare companion, Baymax. Despite its relatively short 102-minute span, this Disney production left an indelible mark on viewers, captivating them with the charm of Baymax. Critics attribute the film’s success to the endearing nature of this robot, all while appreciating it as a heartwarming superhero saga that beautifully illustrates the bond between found families.
Big Hero 6 showcases exceptional world-creation skills, offering an engaging setting for both sci-fi and history enthusiasts. The narrative unfolds in San Fransokyo, a unique cityscape that’s a blend of San Francisco and Tokyo, existing within the Marvel universe on Earth-14123. The film also incorporates numerous references to Japanese culture and traditions. The success of Big Hero 6 has paved the way for an expansive franchise, with two follow-up TV series emerging as a result.
Runtime: 103 minutes
In the follow-up to “Frozen,” we join Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven once more, exploring deeper into the past of Arendelle. The roots of Elsa’s magical abilities unfold as she ventures through the Enchanted Forest and encounters various spirits to grasp her and Anna’s destiny within the kingdom. Given the immense popularity of the original movie, it speaks volumes about the quality of this sequel that many people think it’s equally impressive.
In a refreshing twist from simply repeating the original storyline, the film received praise for delving deeper into the narrative and examining the intricacies of its leading sisters, Elsa and Anna. The delightful sequel resonates strongly with Disney Princess enthusiasts due to Elsa’s impressive actions and Anna’s gentle demeanor. Boasting breathtaking graphics, a heartwarming plot, and universal appeal, Frozen II ranks among the longest children’s movies, running for 103 minutes.
Runtime: 104 minutes
The novel Who Framed Roger Rabbit, penned by Gary K. Wolf, ingeniously blends live-action and animation in the story. Set within a fictional Hollywood universe, where cartoon characters dwell in their own district called Toontown, each character has unique personal and professional lives. However, the situation takes a dramatic turn as the beloved toon, Roger Rabbit, is falsely accused of murdering Marvin Acme, who was having an affair with his wife.
Although not as famous as other Disney productions, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” has earned cult status over time, revealing new intricacies with each viewing. This unique blend of animation and live-action features an unparalleled collaboration between characters from Disney and Warner Bros, climaxing in a memorable piano duel between Daffy and Donald Duck. Notably, it was also the final significant work for voice acting legend Mel Blanc. Spanning 104 minutes, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is among the longest films in Disney’s animated library.
Runtime: 107 minutes
Enchanted” is a film that chronicles the journey of Giselle, a character reminiscent of Disney’s classic animated princess from the realm of Andalasia. Yet, when the malevolent Queen Narissa perceives Giselle as a threat, she transforms her into a real-life woman and transports her to bustling New York City. Initially bewildered and scared by this unfamiliar era, especially in one of the world’s most populous cities, Giselle gradually finds her bliss with a different kind of prince, Robert – a divorce attorney.
The movie “Enchanted” stands out among Disney’s creations for its witty take on a hundred years of princess films, poking fun without being critical. Despite the humor, the film maintains its positive, contemporary fairy-tale vibe. With a running time of 107 minutes, “Enchanted” is longer than average for a 2007 release, but it uses this extended length to portray Giselle’s past and present lives in detail.
Runtime: 107 minutes
It is widely believed that the Disney movie, Moana, stands out as one of the most significant films produced by Disney in the 21st century. Critics have praised its stunning visuals, compelling storyline, captivating soundtrack, and endearing characters for enhancing the traditional Disney style. Even lesser characters such as Jemaine Clement’s Tamatoa and Alan Tudyk’s Hei Hei the Rooster left a lasting impression.
In essence, “Moana” primarily focuses on its title character and her daring cross-ocean journey, with numerous humorous elements serving to offset the story’s somewhat somber tone. Remarkably, “Moana” falls within the ranks of one of Disney’s lengthier films, with a runtime of 107 minutes. Due to its widespread appeal, a sequel, “Moana 2,” hit theaters in 2024; however, it was slightly shorter than this original version, running for just 100 minutes.
