You season 5’s Rotten Tomatoes score leads to new record – and it’s not a good one

The fifth and last season of it broke records, but unfortunately, not in a way you’d typically hope for.

This week, the psychological thriller show made its comeback on Netflix, wrapping up its run with the last set of episodes. The tale of Joe Goldberg, portrayed by Penn Badgley, reaches its end as his questionable past re-emerges after his relocation to New York City.

Clearly, the new season has been met with various opinions from critics, yet it seems that things might not be all sunshine and roses, considering its current 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first 22 reviews.

While the current season’s rating is generally favorable, it falls significantly short compared to the exceptional praise received by its preceding four seasons. These seasons garnered approval ratings of 94%, 89%, 93%, and 92% respectively.

As it turns out, the extensive initial setup was no mere formality; the creators of You have skillfully been building suspense by introducing us to intricate plots before fully revealing their intentions in the last five episodes. They’ve tantalized us with surprise appearances from characters seen in earlier seasons, daring plot twists, and a powerhouse performance by Penn Badgley.

The Guardian

Originally, you were delightful, even if a bit of a guilty indulgence, acknowledging your excessive silliness. However, as time passed, the satirical elements faded, resulting in a confusion that the remaining content now struggles to resolve.

The AV Club

I find myself back for another disappointingly lengthy and puzzling episode. The primary cause of this decline is the absence of a persistent and imaginative flare… Thankfully, the series has reached its end, and television is now free from one enigmatic killer.

During its fifth run, the show You still has some unexpected twists up its sleeve. It’s top-notch trash television, filled with campy, exaggerated elements that are both outrageous and tantalizing. In the end, it provides a satisfying wrap-up to an incredibly convoluted story.

The Evening Standard

Throughout, Penn Badgley delivered powerful performances. However, this series seemed to be in dire need of relief. Fortunately, it has now come to an end, which I’m grateful for.” (This version is slightly less direct and more polite while still conveying the original message.)

Paste Magazine

The fifth season of “You” is likely to leave long-term viewers simultaneously feeling disappointed, frustrated, and delighted. This closing act for the series, which has consistently shown a mix of unpredictable tones and intense emotions, is difficult to turn off.

You is streaming on Netflix.
