The fifth season of ‘You’ revisits previous storylines by introducing recurring characters, one of whom resolves a four-year-old mystery regarding Love Quinn. By the end of ‘You’ season 5, Joe Goldberg experiences his downfall, however, he is exposed as a potential abuser and murderer before any official convictions are made. After killing Clayton, Joe becomes a viral topic, leading numerous individuals from his past to share their encounters with him. While many corroborate the suspicion that something is amiss, there are a few characters who speak positively about him.

Throughout the series, Joe encounters numerous minor characters who have ties to his past victims. Some of these characters were first introduced in season 2 of “You”, and surprisingly, one of them, Dottie Quinn, is absent from season 4. Even after Joe’s supposed death and escape at the end of season 3, it’s quite surprising that Dottie isn’t mentioned or heard from in the subsequent season. However, season 5 rectifies this oversight by bringing Dottie back for a short but true-to-character appearance.

In the third season of “You,” Love’s death marks one of the most impactful moments in the series, trailing only behind Beck’s demise in season 1. Instead, Joe embarks on a fresh start in London at the beginning of this season, leading the narrative to shift and focus on a new concept: Joe transforming into the “Eat the Rich Killer” and confronting his dual personalities. While he does continue to exhibit obsessive behavior towards women throughout the season, it’s not his sole focus as in previous seasons.

In the fourth season of “You”, we don’t witness how Love’s family reacts to her demise as the storyline doesn’t delve into it. However, in the fifth season, Dottie Quinn, Love’s mother, becomes a character. She uses social media to express her doubts about Joe, which sheds light on a significant mystery from Love’s storyline that was mostly overlooked in season 4: whether Love’s family accepts Joe’s account of their daughter and what actions they take subsequently. Leaving this question unanswered could be a major plot hole, considering Joe is the one who caused both Dottie’s children’s deaths.

There’s No Way Love’s Overbearing Mother Wouldn’t Seek Out Joe

Despite Joe’s skillful concealment following the events of You Season 3, Dottie Quinn remains an unresolved issue in the wake of Love’s demise. After all, although Dottie may not be an ideal parent, she’s controlling enough to find it hard to let go of Love’s death. Given her suspicion that her daughter might have killed her former spouse, she might just be accepting Joe’s fabricated story. Yet, it’s surprising that she doesn’t attempt to contact or interrogate Joe after his high-profile return to New York, given that he has her grandson under his care.

Dottie, in her recent social media post, expresses concern that she hasn’t seen Henry and implies that she had always been suspicious of Joe regarding the deaths of Love and Forty. Whether this suspicion was justified or not remains uncertain, but it’s odd that she didn’t appear earlier. Her post clarifies her whereabouts and her emotional state following the disappearance of her children. However, given Dottie’s character, one might expect a more dramatic reaction after learning that Joe is still alive.

In General, The Netflix Series Forgets About Love Too Easily

Despite You Season 5 providing some resolution to Love’s storyline with Dottie’s appearance, the series could have done more to depict the consequences of her death. Love Quinn, who is one of Joe’s most significant and crucial romantic interests in the Netflix series, seems underrepresented given this. The show’s transition past her is almost casual, suggesting that she isn’t as central a figure as one might expect. Love appears minimally in You Season 4, and unfortunately, season 5 doesn’t do much to pay tribute to the character either. Joe seems to have moved on from her fairly quickly, while Beck’s presence continues to linger in his mind.

If Love isn’t able to join these outings, it would still be pleasant to spend more time with her family members. The brief encounter with Dottie, who claims to be wary of Joe, is made all the more disappointing because she could have pursued him or searched for her grandchild over the course of the season. As things stand, This quick appearance doesn’t fully capitalize on this cameo, as it gets lost amidst the numerous issues Joe Goldberg is dealing with. It’s a missed chance, as Dottie could have provided an intriguing challenge for Joe.
