You need to see the brilliant trailer for Anna Maxwell Martin’s period drama with a twist

The first trailer for Anna Maxwell Martin’s new historical drama is out now. But as the playfully named title suggests, Fackham Hall offers a comedic take on the genre.

This show playfully imitates dramas like Downton Abbey and Gosford Park. It centers on Eric Noone, a porter portrayed by Ben Radcliffe, who begins working at a grand manor house and develops a connection with Rose Davenport (Thomasin McKenzie), the daughter of the family who owns it.

But things take a turn when he’s wrongly accused of murder, and the family is also struggling with the fallout from their daughter Poppy’s (Emma Laird) broken engagement to her cousin.

What to Read Next

The trailer offers a preview of the comedy to expect, beginning with a chaotic shooting excursion where various animals—like deer and foxes—are comically shot down. It also introduces Fackham Hall’s peculiar motto: “incestus ad infinitum.”

The story introduces Martin’s stern housekeeper and then quickly shifts to the discovery of Lord Davenport’s murder. Inspector Watt (played by Tom Goodman-Hill) begins the investigation, and a quirky detail reveals he has a detachable Poirot-style mustache that he keeps on a coat rack.

In addition to the previously mentioned actors, Fackham Hall also stars Katherine Waterston from Slow Horses, Tom Felton known for Harry Potter, and comedian Jimmy Carr, who co-wrote the script. Carr also plays a priest in the film, and his intentionally awkward line delivery provides plenty of laughs.

The British film industry excels at two genres: historical dramas and comedies. Since we didn’t have time to create two separate films, we combined them into one. As Carr explained, he’s a little concerned that the film’s title, ‘Fackham Hall,’ might sound different when spoken with a British accent, but he hopes it won’t cause any misunderstandings.

Director Jim O’Hanlan described Fackham Hall as a remarkably funny and intelligent period comedy. He said the script itself was hilarious, making him laugh out loud, while also creating a strong emotional connection to the central couple and the story’s chaotic events.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin was initially considered for the part of Eric, but ultimately Radcliffe, known for his work in Masters of the Air, took on the role.

Fackham Hall is yet to confirm a UK release date.
