You is back on Netflix today! But is the final season worth the wait?

Two years have passed since we last encountered Joe Goldberg, a serial killer with an insatiable love appetite, and now, in the concluding chapter of the Netflix drama, he returns to New York City – the city where his lethal tale originated.

Joe has undergone a transformation in the fourth season. Instead of persisting in his pretense of being a ‘good guy’ who kills out of necessity, he admitted to himself that he had embraced his dark side. Recognizing himself as a wrongdoer, he confessed his crimes to his lover Kate (Charlotte Ritchie). Since Kate also had secrets of her own, their shared past led them to bond and make a pact to support each other in staying on the right path.

The finale of the fourth season had an intriguingly puzzling conclusion; will it take long until Joe resumes his murderous ways, and could Kate succumb to her own sinister nature and team up with him?

In the upcoming season, we find ourselves once again within the luxurious Manhattan residence, where the couple now reside following the unfortunate events that led to Kate inheriting her father’s business and estate after Joe took his life. It seems they have adhered to their promises and are leading a rather uneventful existence with Joe’s son Henry by their side.

Initially, the opening episodes seem rather uneventful. A significant amount of screen time is dedicated to establishing Joe and Kate’s circumstances, particularly their adoption of Henry, who was initially left with their neighbor Dante, and introducing us to Kate’s affluent family. Notable characters include her amiable half-brother Teddy (Griffin Matthews), as well as her twin sisters, portrayed by Anna Camp. The twin sisters, Raegan and Maddie, have contrasting personalities; the ambitious Raegan is after Kate’s position as CEO of Lockwood Corp, while sweet-natured Maddie has a soft spot for Joe, affectionately referring to him as her “Boo-boo.

In a different rendition, there are corporate challenges to conquer as well, yet instead of transforming into a more violent adaptation of “Succession“, which might have been intriguing, it all commences in a relatively mild manner. Even Joe’s voiceovers seem devoid of the sharp wit and sarcasm that initially endeared him to us, despite his gruesome deeds.

At last, it’s great to be back to a beloved location, one which plays a significant role in the story just like characters such as Joe, Kate, and even the late Beck.

It’s been discovered that marrying a woman of considerable wealth has its advantages, not only in terms of child custody matters like Henry, but also in the realm of Manhattan real estate. Indeed, Kate has acquired Mooney’s, the bookstore we first met Joe managing in season one, along with the entire building – including the basement. This space, as you might recall, houses a soundproof plexiglass enclosure – ideal for preserving valuable books or anyone that Joe hasn’t yet had the chance to eliminate…

As the new season starts, Mooney’s shop is shuttered up, yet it is during a visit to his old hangout that Joe unexpectedly encounters a woman named Bronte (Madeline Brewer from “The Handmaid’s Tale”), who has secretly slipped in through an open window to appreciate the books that have been untouched since he left New York six years ago.

Her blossoming camaraderie with Joe brings a refreshing element to the events – being an aspiring playwright, they naturally connect through literature – yet, even diehard fans of You might find it challenging to stay captivated by the narrative during the early episodes. Despite some intended jaw-dropping moments and episode conclusions designed as cliffhangers, these elements often fall flat in terms of surprising or exciting viewers.

As a devoted viewer myself, I can assure you that persevering through this season will ultimately pay off. By the midpoint of its 10 episodes, an unexpected, mind-blowing twist unfolds that makes the wait entirely worthwhile. This twist kickstarts a wild ride leading to a climactic and fulfilling series finale.

As it turns out, all that meticulous preparation was not without purpose, and the creators of You have been skillfully leading us on, saving their biggest moves for the final five episodes. They’ve added tantalizing cameos from characters we’ve seen before, thrown in daring plot twists, and given Penn Badgley a powerhouse performance that is so mesmerizingly insane, you won’t be able to decide whether to adore him endlessly or wish for someone to brutally eliminate him in the most shocking manner.

In the latter part of the series, his fellow actors shine equally brightly. Charlotte Ritchie impressively portrays Kate, giving some of her finest performances in the closing episodes, while Anna Camp masterfully takes on two contrasting characters. However, it’s Madeline Brewer who truly steals the show. She convincingly handles some far-fetched plot developments, and her character’s responses serve to emphasize why we can’t help but be captivated by Joe, despite his being twisted and morally wrong.

Without giving away the ending of the final episode or the overall story, let me assure you that it delivers from start to finish, culminating in a satisfying conclusion. While I won’t disclose if Joe receives a fitting end, those who have followed along this season will undoubtedly be satisfied with how things turn out.
