As a fan who’s lived through countless sleepless nights lulled by Christina Perri‘s enchanting melodies and binge-watched every episode of Sweetpea, I must say, the finale was nothing short of a symphony of surprises! Hearing my beloved artist serenade us with “Sweet Pea” as the credits rolled was like finding a hidden Easter egg in a series that’s already overflowing with intrigue.
If you’re a fan of both Ella Purnell and Christina Perri, then their worlds combined in an unexpected way during the finale of Sweetpea on Starz! It was quite a pleasant surprise to listen to my favorite artist singing “Sweet Pea” as the end credits began.
Here’s Perri’s rendition of a lullaby from her “Songs for Pixie” album, especially for her third child, Pixie Rose. It’s touching to know that as a mother, she has dedicated an album to each of her daughters – Carmella, her eldest, Rosie who was stillborn, and now little Pixie. Give the full song a listen below!
Fans who share a love for the artist and songwriter behind “A Thousand Years” might have instantly recognized the melody when it played at the end of the last episode of Sweetpea. Interestingly, the song carries two distinct interpretations: in one context, Perri is singing to lull her child to sleep; while in the Starz series, the character Rhiannon Lewis, affectionately known as Sweetpea, is its subject.
And it turns out she really isn’t very sweet when she discovers a desire to kill. Yup. We’re going to keep this spoiler free for those of you planning to watch the finale on the Starz channel tonight. But let’s just say the cheerful tune has an eery feel to it based on the bloody cliffhanger we’re left with as the camera zooms in on Rhiannon’s face. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t fit though. Strangely it does, and the tone it provides works.
Up above, I pointed out that it was quite a delightful twist for fans like us who follow the show and appreciate Perri’s talent. The moment I heard her voice, it clicked, and I’m thrilled they chose her rendition of the song. Interestingly, the tune she sings was originally sung by Amos Lee. You should definitely check out that version too! What were your thoughts on this unexpected treat?
Sweetpea is now streaming on Starz.
