It appears Marvel Studios could face some challenges with their upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Based on reports from several sources, test screenings held in Los Angeles this week have elicited mixed reactions. Despite being in post-production, the initial response indicates that the reboot might not be the successful comeback for Marvel’s original family as Kevin Feige had anticipated.

Journalist Jeff Sneider from The InSneider reported insights from an attendee at a screening, labeling the movie as “average” and “so-so.” He added that it wasn’t terrible but also not exceptional. However, comments about poor character development and subpar CGI might be cause for concern. Sneider mentioned that the issue with CGI is likely to be addressed in the coming weeks as visual effects are refined.

As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that Marvel is quite selective about public test screenings. They only seem to organize them when they’re concerned, as was the case with movies like Eternals, The Marvels, Quantumania, and Brave New World.

Initially, Sneider stated that Marvel had a positive internal outlook towards the project, but another anonymous source allegedly characterized it as “chaotic” and “a big problem film”, similar to the language previously used for The Marvels prior to its disappointing premiere.

While not every response was positive, there were also some favorable reactions. Sneider pointed out that Ralph Ineson’s portrayal of Galactus was generally well-received, which he deemed as a “positive” indication. Furthermore, the introduction of Galactus in the movie appears to elevate its second half, an opinion shared by renowned test screening insider @ViewerAnon.

The general sentiment seems to be “Alright,” however, it’s important to note that the feedback is not extensive yet. A few individuals have mentioned that the initial part is a bit rocky, but things improve noticeably when Galactus makes an appearance.

UserAnon summarized the general feedback as “acceptable, but not based on a large number of responses,” mentioning that “a few individuals found the initial act shaky, but it improved once Galactus appeared.” They also pointed out that the version shown was “far from complete,” with approximately 25% of visual effects still missing – a factor that might have influenced audience opinions.

Although the film isn’t causing the intense responses similar to those from Superman test screenings, Marvel’s decision to conduct a public trial run implies some apprehension within the studio. With no blockbuster success since Deadpool and Wolverine, and Bob Iger reportedly dissatisfied with the 2026 release plan, The Fantastic Four was anticipated to be a cornerstone for the brand, along with the upcoming X-Men reboot, to help revive its glory.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
