John Krasinski’s latest film, titled “The Fountain of Life“, marks the second instance where he assumes a character previously portrayed by Harrison Ford. Upon the debut of the initial trailer for “The Fountain of Life“, it became evident that the production bore striking resemblance to “Indiana Jones“. While it’s not unusual for films to draw inspiration from popular franchises like “Indiana Jones“, the adventure genre is often overlooked. I, for one, am eager for more movies akin to “Indiana Jones“. Regrettably, the reception towards “The Fountain of Life” has been quite unfavorable, with Alexander Harrison from Ebaster giving it a score of 5 out of 10.

Despite boasting a talented cast led by Guy Ritchie’s direction, the movie titled “Fountain of Youth,” released on Apple TV+ on May 23, 2025, has failed to impress both critics and viewers. Although it aims to deliver an exhilarating globe-trotting adventure, it ultimately disappoints. While there are some enjoyable moments, overall I was left feeling unimpressed by the conclusion of “Fountain of Youth.” Additionally, it appears that Krasinski’s attempt to step into the shoes once worn by Indiana Jones, one of Ford’s most recognized characters, may not have been the best choice.

John Krasinski’s Fountain Of Youth Is A Clear Riff On Indiana Jones

Unfortunately, Fountain Of Youth Can’t Live Up To Indiana Jones

In the latest Apple TV+ production, John Krasinski portrays Luke Purdue, an archaeologist and adventurer tasked by a wealthy tycoon to locate the legendary Fountain of Youth. To carry out this mission, he enlists his sister, Charlotte, who is hesitant about rejoining the exploration life. Though Charlotte has abandoned her adventuring days, Luke remains compelled by his thirst for undiscovered riches and the mysteries of the world. The movie delves into themes such as treasure being best left untouched and how Luke’s pursuits can sometimes result in death and the release of malevolent powers.

The concept you see here is reminiscent of the Indiana Jones series, where it’s evident that the Fountain of Youth storyline was significantly influenced by these movies. The main character, played by Krasinski, bears a striking resemblance to Indiana Jones, as he is known for his daring and impulsive nature, often finding himself in perilous predicaments.

Fountain Of Youth Isn’t John Krasinski’s First Time Trying To Replace A Harrison Ford Icon

John Krasinski Also Plays Jack Ryan

Given how similar their personas are, it isn’t too far-fetched to assume Krasinski may have been aiming to take over one of Ford’s legendary roles with The Fountain of Youth. This is particularly relevant since 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marked Ford’s last appearance as the famous whip-wielding adventurer, opening up an opportunity for a fresh face to step into the spotlight and become the new leading figure in the adventure genre. Regrettably, due to the lackluster reception of The Fountain of Youth, it’s unlikely that Krasinski will be the one to do so.

Previously, Krasinski hasn’t just taken on the role of Indiana Jones in Fountain of Youth; rather, since 2018, he’s portrayed Jack Ryan, a well-known figure who was initially played by Ford in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). Granted, Krasinski isn’t stepping into the shoes of Indiana Jones exactly, but there’s no denying the similarities. Fortunately, Krasinski’s Jack Ryan series has received more positive feedback than his latest film, and he’s set to reprise the character in an upcoming movie as well.

Fountain Of Youth Proves John Krasinski Wouldn’t Be Right For An Indiana Jones Reboot

Harrison Ford Is A Difficult Actor To Replace

Despite Krasinski having portrayed Jack Ryan for several years and finding success in that role, it’s clear from “Fountain of Youth” that he might not be an ideal choice to replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in a potential reboot of the franchise. Although there hasn’t been official confirmation about a reboot, given that “Dial of Destiny” marked Ford’s final adventure with the character, it’s possible that the iconic series could be revived at some point. If a reboot ever occurs, finding a suitable replacement for Harrison Ford would undoubtedly prove to be a challenging task.

In other words, it’s not that Krasinski is subpar in “Fountain of Youth”, as his roles in “Jack Ryan” and “A Quiet Place” demonstrate his talent as a leading actor. Yet, he doesn’t possess the same captivating charm as Harrison Ford. The character Luke Purdue in “Fountain of Youth” isn’t as appealing as Indiana Jones, indicating that Krasinski might not be the ideal choice to step into Ford’s shoes.
