As I delved into the towering role of Galactus in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, it became clear that preparing for this cosmic titan required an equally grand approach. This colossal villain can transform to dwarf even the tallest skyscrapers or expand beyond the boundaries of planets. To tap into his immense consciousness, Ineson shared with Empire Magazine that he embarked on a journey through the vast, reverberating tunnels of Mont Blanc, visualizing these cavernous passages as his very windpipe and trachea. Yet, this wasn’t his only source of inspiration – he also drew upon otherworldly landscapes and immense structures to fuel his portrayal of this unparalleled menace in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As a movie-loving connoisseur, I found myself graced by the towering splendor of numerous architectural marvels, including the iconic Gherkin building in London. Atop this steel behemoth, I attended a wedding that left me transfixed, spending the better part of the afternoon lost in contemplative wonder as I gazed out upon the cityscape below. My tranquil reverie was, however, interrupted by a gentle yet firm reminder from my wife, who gently chided, “Dear, at some point, you should perhaps extend your warmest congratulations to the bride and groom!
Director Matt Shakman emphasized incorporating practical effects for Ineson’s portrayal of Galactus, the World-Devourer, despite acknowledging that Galactus is a colossal, 14-billion-year-old cosmic entity that consumes planets. Though he is indeed an immensely powerful and destructive force, potentially annihilating all life in the galaxy, Ineson doesn’t see his character as inherently evil. Instead, he describes Galactus as a kind of deity.
