An American Saga – Chapter 2,” is yet uncertain about its continuation. Initially conceived as a fresh franchise, this series aimed to narrate tales from the post-Civil War Western expansion era in America. The first chapter was finally released on June 28, 2024, but it didn’t fare well. “Horizon – Chapter 1” received mixed criticisms and bombed at the box office, grossing only $38.7 million against an estimated budget of $50 million.
Initially, the intention was to present “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” approximately two months following the premiere of the first movie. This was originally slated for August 16, 2024; however, due to the financial flop of the initial film, its release date has been canceled. Since then, Costner and his team have been working tirelessly to revive the series by various means, such as streaming “Chapter 1” to spark more curiosity. Regrettably, as we approach the anniversary of its original planned release date, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” is still without a viewership.
But It Did Get Shown At A Major Film Festival
As a devoted cinema aficionado, I’m eagerly anticipating the second chapter of the Horizon saga. Unlike many film sequels, production for Horizon 2 has been completed, leaving only distribution as the final hurdle. Whether it graces our screens in a cinema or on a streaming platform, its fate remains undecided due to one significant factor: it lacks a new release date. While the project hasn’t been officially scrapped, its indefinite delay on the release calendar has grown increasingly unpredictable.
Interestingly enough, the sequel to “Horizon: An American Saga” titled “Chapter 2” made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival back in 2024. Although only a select few have viewed the film, it has been largely kept out of the public eye. Much like its predecessor, the reception for “Chapter 2” on Rotten Tomatoes has been divided. At present, it boasts a 54% Tomatometer score with 13 reviews counted. In his review for “Horizon – Chapter 2”, Alex Harrison of ScreenRant awarded the movie 5 out of 10 stars, stating that “Horizon might have thrived better as a TV series”.
The Horizon Movies Are Currently In A Legal Battle About Financing
This Is Bad For Distribution Prospects
The Horizon series is facing a complex situation due to ongoing lawsuits, one of which could potentially hinder the franchise’s future. Recently, it was disclosed that Horizon is embroiled in a legal dispute concerning the film’s funding. The production was jointly funded by Horizon Series, Costner’s personal loan-out company, and New Line Cinema. At the heart of this disagreement lies the claim that the production failed to repay its lender, City National Bank.
The dispute, started by City National Bank, was when they initiated arbitration against both financing groups. Unwilling to back down, New Line Cinema countered with a cross-claim against Horizon Series. In essence, New Line alleges that Costner’s company breached their agreement. As of now, it appears that these legal matters remain unresolved.
Regardless of the filming for “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” being completed, there are financial obligations that arise at every stage. If this film were to be released in cinemas, it would entail expenses like promotion and advertising, such as publicity and marketing costs. Due to these financial complications, it seems unlikely that the movie will hit the big screen until any legal issues regarding its finances are resolved. As the legal disputes have only just surfaced, and there’s no scheduled release date at present, the fate of Horizon 2 is growing increasingly uncertain.
Kevin Costner Has Been Sued For A Horizon 2 Unscripted Sexual Assault Scene
This Could Create Bad PR For The Movie
Regrettably, my support for the project isn’t just about its financial hurdles; this year, it’s also faced a legal challenge. Just this week, Devyn LaBella, a stunt performer on Horizon 2, filed a lawsuit against Costner and his team. She claims that she was asked to perform a graphic rape scene without adequate warning or the presence of an intimacy coordinator, leading her to sue the production companies for sexual discrimination, harassment, and creating a hostile work environment. Costner’s attorney dismisses this allegation as having “no merit.” The court proceedings schedule remains undisclosed at this time.
As a fervent admirer, I must say that the ongoing legal dispute concerning financing is indeed a challenge for the movie. However, the recent allegations against LaBella seem to be an even thornier issue. This new case could potentially halt any further advancements in the release of Horizon – Chapter 2, which is troubling enough. Moreover, such a sexual harassment claim, given the growing importance of intimacy coordinators in Hollywood and their role in on-set safety, could leave an unpleasant aftertaste for both the general public and potential industry associates.
Will Horizon: Chapter 2 Still Get Released?
Other Movies Have Recovered From Huge Scandals
This year has demonstrated that even with strong opposition and legal complications, a movie can still find its way to the big screen. For instance, the Western drama Rust, starring Alec Baldwin, garnered significant attention in 2021 following an unfortunate incident on set where a prop gun discharged unintentionally, leading to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Her passing ignited a legal dispute that delayed the film’s distribution. Despite these challenges and the ensuing controversy, it eventually premiered in theaters on May 2, although its initial release was somewhat subdued.
It’s quite possible that Horizon 2 might continue a similar path, potentially making its way to U.S. screens despite encountering substantial hurdles. The fact that it was showcased at Venice suggests it will be distributed somehow, given the dedication of Costner and his team to ensure the project’s visibility. With the movie already finished, this certainly bolsters its chances. However, the lessons from Rust serve as a reminder: legal disputes can lead to significant delays. Unfortunately, Horizon is embroiled in not one, but two such legal battles, which will not hasten its release and could potentially cause multi-year postponements.
