In simpler terms, the movie “Lilo & Stitch” had a successful opening at the box office, but it’s uncertain if it will reach a billion dollars in earnings. This new production is Disney’s latest adaptation of one of their old animated films. However, by 2026, the remake of the 2016 movie “Moana” will likely surpass it. At the moment, this remake is the one that updates the most recent release, which was the 2002 animation titled “Lilo & Stitch.” The story revolves around a young orphan named Lilo (played by Maia Kealoha) who befriends a mischievous blue alien experiment, whom she names Stitch (portrayed by Chris Sanders).

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but rejoice over the incredible opening weekend of “Lilo & Stitch”! This fantastic movie, featuring Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance, and Hannah Waddingham, not only captivated audiences domestically but also shattered records. It became the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut in the history of the domestic box office, surpassing the impressive $126.7 million start of “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022. While we’ll have to wait and see if the 2025 movie will emulate “Top Gun’s” success and gross over $1 billion, this strong start is definitely a promising sign for many more exciting moments ahead!

Lilo & Stitch’s Current Box Office Total (So Far)

It Has Already Outgrossed The Original Movie

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the incredible debut of “Lilo & Stitch.” Breaking a Memorial Day record in North America was just the beginning; its global opening weekend surpassed expectations even further. At the time I’m writing this, the box office reports for the movie are available up until the holiday Monday. The figures reveal that this heartwarming film has raked in an astonishing $361.2 million worldwide in just four days! This impressive sum is a result of a whopping $182.6 million earned domestically and another $178.6 million from international cinemas. To put this into perspective, the original 2002 release only managed to gather $273.1 million worldwide during its entire run, which translates to $487 million when adjusted for inflation. Needless to say, “Lilo & Stitch” is off to a phenomenal start and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

In “Lilo & Stitch,” the story is engaging, the characters are lovable, and the animation is top-notch. The film’s emotional depth, humor, and heart make it a standout Disney movie that both kids and adults can enjoy.

I am confident that Lilo & Stitch will prove to be a tremendous success, marking the start of an impressive summer at the box office. It seems that Disney is now grasping the essence that these live-action adaptations should mirror the charm and appeal of their original animated versions. People don’t go to cinemas merely to witness improved animation or fancy special effects on empty green-screened sets. Instead, they seek an emotional journey and a compelling reason to rekindle the feelings evoked by the narrative. Lilo & Stitch succeeds in doing just that.

The 2002 release date of the original movie might be contributing to its strong emotional appeal for viewers, since many people who adored Lilo & Stitch during their childhood have now grown up and may have children who are at the ideal age to watch the reboot. This makes the film appealing not just to younger audiences but also to families as a whole.

Lilo & Stitch Should Have Fairly Strong Legs At The Box Office

It Has Little Direct Competition

Predictions for the second weekend of Lilo & Stitch at the box office haven’t been released yet, but it appears that the film will maintain a substantial audience as the summer movie season progresses, given its successful marketing campaign and robust word-of-mouth buzz. With a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an almost perfect CinemaScore of “A”, it has outperformed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which earned an “A-” and ranked second at the domestic box office during Memorial Day weekend.

Beyond A Minecraft Movie that’s still running, Lilo & Stitch is the only major film at present specifically targeted for children. The upcoming Karate Kid: Legends on May 30 might offer some competition as it seems geared towards pre-teens and above, but there won’t be another significant kid-focused rival in the summer movie season until the live-action How to Train Your Dragon on June 13. This leaves ample room for Lilo & Stitch to keep rising in the box office rankings, potentially approaching a billion-dollar global gross.

Lilo & Stitch Is Likely To Make Over $1 Billion At The Box Office

Precedent Shows That It Has A Strong Chance

Not only is it nearly a third of the way to grossing $1 billion globally with Lilo & Stitch, but history suggests it has a strong chance of surpassing that milestone. It managed the third-highest opening weekend for a Disney live-action remake, falling between the 2010 release of Alice in Wonderland and the 2017 debut of Beauty and the Beast, both of which exceeded $1 billion. Take a look at how its opening weekend stacks up against other modern Disney live-action remakes that had a worldwide theatrical release and are direct remakes instead of reimaginings, sequels, or prequels:

| Movie | Year | Opening Weekend (Worldwide) | Final Worldwide Gross |
|||||
| Lilo & Stitch | 2022 | TBD | TBD |
| Alice in Wonderland | 2010 | $336.8M | $1.028B |
| Beauty and the Beast | 2017 | $357M | $1.264B |
| Cinderella | 2015 | $235.9M | $543.5M |
| The Jungle Book | 2016 | $103.2M | $966.6M |
| Maleficent | 2014 | $69.7M | $758.5M |
| Pete’s Dragon | 2016 | $22.6M | $103.1M |

Title Domestic Debut Worldwide Box Office
The Lion King (2019) $191.7 million $1.657 billion
Beauty and the Beast (2017) $174.7 million $1.263 billion
Lilo & Stitch (2025) $146 million TBD
Alice in Wonderland (2010) $116.1 million $1.025 billion
The Jungle Book (2016) $103.2 million $966.5 million
The Little Mermaid (2023) $95.5 million $569.6 million
Aladdin (2019) $91.5 million $1.051 billion
Cinderella (2015) $67.8 million $543.5 million
Dumbo (2019) $45.9 million $353.3 million
Snow White (2025) $42.2 million $204.2 million

If Lilo & Stitch follows the typical path of movies that debut at the top of the box office, it has a good chance not just to reach but also significantly exceed the $1 billion mark. This is particularly likely if it maintains its strong appeal among audiences over the next few months. Its main competition until July ends will come from How to Train Your Dragon, Elio from Pixar, and The Smurfs from Paramount, so it could easily prosper in its niche audience.

Predicting Lilo & Stitch’s Final Box Office Total

It Could Become One Of The Highest-Grossing Movies Of All Time

In an unusual turn of events, the initial release of the Disney live-action remake feels extraordinary compared to “Lilo & Stitch”, as it falls about $30 million short of its closest competitor’s opening weekend earnings and is only marginally higher than the next lowest. This makes it challenging to forecast the film’s final box office multiplier. However, considering that the average worldwide multiplier for films earning over $1 billion within the Disney franchise hovers around 9, this figure would roughly equate to a global revenue of approximately $1.314 billion for the movie.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’ve got a feeling that the delightful tale of Lilo & Stitch might just surpass expectations and climb significantly higher than the $1 billion mark. If it mirrors the success trajectory of 2019’s Aladdin, it could potentially reach astronomical heights, perhaps even touching $1.679 billion. While this figure wouldn’t dethrone the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 as the year’s highest-grossing movie, it would undoubtedly secure a spot among the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time worldwide. This is not an unrealistic expectation, given that Aladdin‘s Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score was remarkably similar to the 2025 film, with a Verified Hot 94% rating.
