It’s been shown several times that Mike Ross was the main driving force behind the legal drama ‘Suits’, which premiered in 2011. The unconventional tale of a lawyer imposter with an eidetic memory who found employment at one of New York’s top firms captivated audiences immediately. Despite the spinoffs, Pearson and Suits LA, having their own qualities, they couldn’t replicate what made the original series a hit.
The TV show “Suits” stood out as exceptional in the legal drama genre. However, it deviated somewhat from its original form during the last two seasons, revealing a stark truth about the series which the spin-offs should have taken note of. The characters in “Suits” were the key to the show’s success, and while figures like Donna, Jessica, Louis, Rachel, and Harvey were all impressive, it was Mike who truly shone. One of the reasons for the cancellation of “Suits LA” could be attributed to the franchise’s lack of recognition of this fact.
Suits LA’s Cancellation Is Another Reminder That Suits Was About Mike Ross
Mike Ross Was The Glue That Held Suits Together
Approximately six years following the termination of “Pearson” after just one season, another spinoff of “Suits” met a similar end. Both “Pearson” and “Suits LA” lacked a crucial element that set the original series apart from typical legal dramas. Although “Suits LA” was an enjoyable show, it failed to capture the essence that characterized “Suits”, which was Mike Ross. To be fair, Ted Black was an engaging lead character, but there wasn’t anything particularly exceptional about him other than being a competent lawyer.
In a different phrase, it can be said that Mike was exceptional in numerous ways. He possessed an extraordinary memory, showed unwavering loyalty, and practiced law despite never attending law school or passing the bar exam. Given that ‘Suits’ centered around Mike’s connection with his mentor, it is not surprising that the show struggled without him, or that ‘Suits LA’ failed to captivate audiences in the same way when they lacked a lead character as compelling as Mike.
Mike Ross’ Secret Is What Made Suits More Than Just Another Legal Drama
Without Mike’s Secret, Suits Lost Its Best Hook
Fundamentally, “Suits” wasn’t primarily a series focusing on lawyers and their intriguing cases. Instead, it was a tale of camaraderie between two individuals facing the world together. For five seasons, Mike’s hidden truth – that he wasn’t a genuine lawyer – served as the show’s central conflict. When it was revealed that he had been engaging in illicit activities, the narrative lost its main appeal. Essentially, Mike’s false identity presented ethical dilemmas and kept the other characters suspecting him of fraud, which helped sustain the series.
The unique element of Mike’s true identity significantly elevated the tension in Suits, a factor that no comparable series could match. However, when this central mystery was resolved and Patrick J. Adams departed, the show took an entirely different direction, one that many viewers found disappointing. Despite some positive aspects in the last two seasons of Suits, they are often criticized as its weakest period. In essence, Suits lost its charm without Mike.
Harvey Is Great, But The Suits Franchise Needs Both Of Its Protagonists
Harvey And Mike’s Dynamic Was The Best Thing About Suits
Harvey is unquestionably one of the most outstanding characters on Suits. His charm, arrogance, and intricacy revitalized the show following Patrick J. Adams’ departure. Nevertheless, without Mike, Harvey’s narrative lost some sparkle. The duo of Mike and Harvey was a vibrant pairing that thrived on each other’s vitality. Harvey mentored Mike in becoming a skilled lawyer, while Mike, conversely, revealed Harvey’s tender side by displaying his concern for his protege.
The eighth and ninth seasons of Suits struggled to continue without its main cast, ultimately falling short. Similarly, Suits LA faced a similar issue, as it lacked the captivating dynamic between Mike and Harvey that made the original series so engaging. Recreating the sharp dialogue exchanged by the two lead characters in Suits proved challenging, which was a key factor in the spinoff shows’ inability to match the success of the original program.
