In 2023, the sequel titled “City Primeval” to the critically-acclaimed neo-Western series “Justified” was unveiled. The announcement sparked enthusiasm among fans, anticipating the return of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, portrayed by Timothy Olyphant, on television. However, upon the finale of “Justified: City Primeval”, while the show earned praise from critics once more, universal acclaim was somewhat absent.
Despite receiving strong performances from its cast, including Timothy Olyphant, and staying true to the original series’ source material by Elmore Leonard, Justified: City Primeval has left audiences underwhelmed with a 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show’s lack of popularity remains puzzling.
Refreshingly entertaining: “City Primeval” served as an enjoyable revisit, bringing back familiar themes, actions, and characters from its predecessor. Perhaps audiences were overly critical; “City Primeval” is worth another chance.
‘Justified: City Primeval’ Navigated a 12-Year Time Jump with Expert Precision
Bringing back the character of Givens after such a long time might seem challenging, even impossible, yet “Justified: City Primeval” manages to blend nostalgia and freshness in an impressive way. It’s been eight years since “Justified” ended, but the premiere of “Justified: City Primeval” was shown in July 2023. The series opens with Raylan Givens still serving as a U.S. Marshal, though his circumstances have significantly shifted. Rather than being based in Kentucky, Givens is now in Miami with his 15-year-old daughter, Willa (portrayed by Vivian Olyphant, the actress’s real-life daughter). The story unfolds as he takes Willa on a job to Detroit, where he becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of Judge Alvin Guy (Keith David).
In the series ‘Justified: City Primeval’, flashbacks are used to delve deeper into the characters of Clement Mansell, also known as “The Oklahoma Wildman” (portrayed by Boyd Holbrook), and Detroit ally Carolyn Wilder (played by Aunjanue Ellis). Furthermore, throughout all eight episodes, viewers can see Raylan Givens grappling with his professional obligations while tending to Willa, highlighting the fact that his life has become significantly more complex compared to what it was twelve years prior.
In various sequences featuring the Olyphants, this dynamic is emphasized, particularly during instances where Willa observes the peril Raylan finds himself in daily and some of the harsh actions he takes to ensure safety. As Vivian Olyphant shared with The Hollywood Reporter prior to filming the scene where Raylan Givens brutally subdues Mandell.
As I prepared for the emotional depth of my character, Michael Dinner guided me with these poignant words: “Visualize this as if it’s the last time you’re seeing your father, and he won’t return.” In that moment, I believe my character grasps her mistake. It’s a heavy burden to witness a father’s violence, and she carries the weight of guilt, feeling responsible for pushing her dad even further away.
The ‘Justified: City Primeval’ Cast Featured Familiar Friends and Foes
In the spin-off show titled “Justified: Primeval“, viewers who enjoy the original series “Justified” are treated to a collection of familiar characters. The ex-wife of Raylan Givens, Winona Hawkins (played by Natalie Zea), makes an appearance, along with Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Grant (portrayed by Matt Craven) and Deputy Greg Sutter (David Koechner).
A significant surprise (and potentially a spoiler) in Justified: City Primeval is the reappearance of Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), who was a major antagonist from the original series. This return was thrilling for viewers who followed their past encounters, and it’s a reason explained by show creators Michael Dinner and Dave Andron to The Hollywood Reporter for including this cameo. Andron stated that this decision was influenced by the excitement it would bring to fans familiar with their story.
This ending seems reminiscent of Elmore Leonard’s style, inducing a wide grin among viewers. The narrative takes us along with Raylan, followed by a memorable moment shared with Boyd. It appears that if one seeks to delve into a world without resorting to overtly cheesy reunions, this is the way to do it.
A notable appearance was made in the fifth episode of ‘Justified: City Primeval’, which is a spin-off from the film adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s ‘Out of Sight’. In the 1998 movie ‘Out of Sight’, Paul Calderon portrayed Raymond Cruz. This clever crossover between Elmore Leonard’s works holds a deeper significance for dedicated fans, as in Elmore Leonard’s novel ‘City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit’, it is indeed Cruz who takes the lead role as the main character.
‘Justified: City Primeval’ Wasn’t Perfect, but It Was Praised By Critics
The series wasn’t flawless, with some critics expressing disappointment over moving Raylan Givens from his rural Kentucky home to an urban environment. USA Today described it as “disappointing” and “more puzzling than enjoyable.” Nevertheless, the show received positive reviews, particularly due to Timothy Olyphant’s return. The Guardian simply stated that the series was well-received.
In the new role, Olyphant plays a character named Givens who, as his hair turns gray, is starting to question whether there might be something beyond apprehending criminals that life has to offer.
TVLine found it delightful that Olyphant remained perfectly in character as Raylan, maintaining his stride without a hitch, and appreciated the intense chemistry between him and other characters. The fresh cast members on Justified: City Primeval, particularly Vondie Curtis-Hall as Marcus “Sweety” Sweeton, Marin Ireland as Maureen Downey, and Norbert Leo Butz as Norbert Byrl, were highlighted as one of the main joys of the Detroit setting.
Justified: City Primeval is available to stream on Hulu.
