Hideo Kojima, renowned video game creator known for his unique creations like the Metal Gear series, is stepping out of the gaming world as Death Stranding, his critically acclaimed 2019 open-world adventure set in a post-apocalyptic America, has been approved for an anime adaptation. This isn’t the first adaptation for Death Stranding, but a second one is underway, and given Kojima’s quirky style, it seems fitting that this adaptation will be in the medium best suited to capture his eccentricities.
Hideo Kojima revealed plans for a new Death Stranding anime during an interview with Vogue Japan, hinting at the upcoming sequel game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The game’s creator shared his aspirations for A24’s Death Stranding movie, and in a casual manner, revealed that A24 isn’t the only studio working on a Death Stranding adaptation. Intriguingly, he added, “We are also developing an anime version of the game.
At this point, no further information about the Death Stranding anime has been disclosed. From Hideo Kojima’s brief remarks, it appears that the project is in its early stages. What fans are particularly keen to discover is which anime studio will take charge of the adaptation. Many are hopeful for studios such as Toei or MAPPA, but Science SARU, recognized for works like Dandadan, Ping Pong the Animation, and Devilman Crybaby, could also be a strong contender. This studio is praised for its unique artistic styles and unconventional storytelling.
Hideo Kojima Has High Hopes for A24’s ‘Death Stranding’
In the course of the profile interview, Hideo Kojima discussed A24’s upcoming movie version of a video game. This rapidly expanding studio is aiming to rule the domain of video game adaptations, having recently revealed that Alex Garland, known for his work on ‘Civil War’, will direct an adaptation of FromSoftware’s ‘Elden Ring’.
Kojima is also involved in creating a live-action movie based on Death Stranding with A24. He differentiated between two types of adaptations: some follow the storyline from the source material closely, while others expand upon the game’s universe. In discussing his approach for Death Stranding, he mentioned films like The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie as examples of adaptations that either stick to the plot or cater to fans of the game, respectively.
As a cinephile, I’m eager to bring stories to life on the big screen. My ambition is to adapt Death Stranding into a cinematic masterpiece that can only be achieved through filmmaking. I envision it as a contender for prestigious awards at both Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
This spring, a movie adaptation of A24’s game “Death Stranding” was unveiled. The director behind “A Quiet Place: Day One”, Michael Sarnoski, has been appointed to helm this upcoming film. However, neither the movie nor any of the anime adaptations have been scheduled for release as of now.
