Elisabeth Moss isn’t quite done with her character from The Handmaid’s Tale just yet. Despite June (formerly Offred) and the group of rebellious handmaids seemingly taking their final bows in the series finale on Hulu, the actress suggests that the story is far from over. This could be due to the fact that Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel, The Testaments, is also being adapted into a television series by the same team behind Moss’s show. While she doesn’t confirm it outright, her interview hints seem to indicate that this might be the case.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Moss fondly looked back at her time portraying June, admitting it as her most cherished role yet, even surpassing her iconic performance as Peggy Olsen from Mad Men on AMC. The actress attributes this sentiment to the profound growth and personal development she underwent during filming.

Per her chat with EW:

For nearly a decade now, it’s been an extraordinary journey. This timeframe has not simply been a segment of my life; instead, it has essentially defined who I am. The transformation I’ve undergone, both personally and professionally, during these nine years is astounding. To be honest, the boundaries between these aspects of my existence have blurred quite significantly. [Laughs.] In this time, I ascended to the role of an executive producer on this show – a position I had never held before. Then, I transitioned into directing and eventually became a mother. My life has experienced such profound alterations and expansion in the last nine years. It’s deeply entwined within the very essence of who I am today. The thing that will stand out to me is something truly captivating that I believe resonates with our audience, even if they may not consciously realize it – it’s the dedication and talent of this cast and crew, which can be seen but often goes unacknowledged as an unconscious observation.

Isn’t it understandable that the actress finds it hard to let go of the role and the associated family, given she seems reluctant to part with it? Although Moss states that she doesn’t know what will happen to June next, she is content that June’s tale isn’t finished, considering June’s narrative continues in the novel’s epilogue and revolves around the new generation of Gilead in The Testaments.

As a dedicated movie reviewer, I must say, there’s something incredibly satisfying about not having to bid adieu to that captivating world and the mesmerizing character just yet. It’s a relief, really, after wrapping up other shows where you’re left with a heavy heart, knowing that this is it – the final chapter of a beloved persona.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope that our cherished June might make a comeback. Until then, I’m just grateful she’s not gone forever. I adore playing this character more than any other, and at this moment, she ranks as my all-time favorite. Needless to say, the thought of letting her go is far from appealing.

Elisabeth Moss Was Thrilled To Get Emily Back For The Series Finale

According to Moss, the creator of the series, Bruce Miller, had often discussed bringing back Bledel’s character, Offred (Emily), after she left at the end of Season 4. When he finally offered her the opportunity to reprise her role as Emily, Bledel was thrilled and immediately agreed. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained that her decision to return was instinctive, feeling that it was the right moment to wrap up Emily’s storyline and provide a sense of completion for the audience. She added that working with Bruce Miller and many of the original crew in Season 6 made her eager to be part of the show once more.

In her appearance, Bledel expressed the sentiment that viewers should retain optimism, even when situations appear hopeless. She encourages everyone to sow seeds of hope, even if it seems unlikely that they will sprout. Miraculously, these seeds may just find a path to flourish.
