The well-liked police series, “Chicago P.D.”, continues to be a hit as part of the “One Chicago” franchise, and has officially been renewed for season 12. Created for television by renowned producer Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, “Chicago P.D.” focuses on the officers of the Intelligence Unit, who use their unique skills to solve some of the city’s toughest cases. Similar to many of Wolf’s other TV procedurals, “Chicago P.D.” stands out due to its ability to blend engaging weekly plotlines with in-depth character development that explores the officers’ personal lives.

Chicago P.D., which debuted in 2014 as the initial spin-off from Chicago Fire, quickly demonstrated that the “One Chicago” universe was just as compelling as Dick Wolf’s other shows. However, the start of Season 11 was postponed, along with other contemporary series, due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Despite this delay, its popularity remained undiminished. Consequently, the success of previous seasons made it predictable that season 12 would follow suit.

Chicago P.D. Season 12 Critical Reception

Critics Love Voight But Hate The Lack Of Other Characters

In simple terms, the response to Chicago P.D.’s twelfth season has been mixed, as it seems there are equal parts high points and low points. One aspect that has received praise from critics is the season-long theme of corruption within the police force, coupled with an old-school antagonist. This narrative allows for Voight to return to his roots, a development that many critics, such as ScreenRant, appreciate. However, it’s important to mention some disappointment expressed over the handling of the finale in Chicago P.D.’s twelfth season.

This season culminates with a potential wedding between Ruzek and Burgess, however, the focus of the storyline shifts away from their union this season. Despite being the longest-lasting couple in the series, their wedding in the final episode seems somewhat underdeveloped compared to other plotlines, particularly those involving Voight.

The show, being in its twelfth season and having long-established characters, had to take a new direction. This transformation is achieved by delving into Voight’s PTSD following the events of the previous season and exploring the mortality of these characters. Essentially, the season explores what comes after their professional lives, a concept that Decider finds “refreshing”.

As a movie enthusiast, it’s truly captivating to witness the series delve into the climax of its characters’ lives, some of whom I’ve been following for quite a while now.

The television series “Chicago P.D” continues to thrive, with only a minimal decrease in viewership even at its twelfth season. In comparison to the preceding season, it experienced approximately a 10% drop in live audience (as reported by TV Series Finale). This is quite impressive audience retention given that an increasing number of viewers are streaming the show afterwards. Notably, the series still attracts over 4.5 million live viewers per episode on average.

Where To Watch Chicago P.D. Season 12

Chicago P.D. Season 12 Is Available To Stream

Even though Chicago P.D’s season 12 premiered on NBC during the TV season, additional episodes were later added to Peacock following their initial broadcast. Now that the season has wrapped up, the full season can be streamed on Peacock. Additionally, Peacock serves as the hub for the entire One Chicago universe, allowing you to effortlessly watch all crossover episodes.

Season 12 Aired As Part Of The 2024-2025 TV Season

Following the disrupted season 11 due to strikes, the Chicago P.D. series and its One Chicago relatives resumed their regular broadcasts. NBC arranged for all three of the One Chicago shows to be aired every Wednesday during the 2024-2025 television season. The twelfth season of Chicago P.D. premiered on September 25, 2024. The season finale was shown on May 21, 2025.

Chicago P.D. Season 12 Cast

The Main Cast Returned For Season 12

The main characters in series such as “Chicago P.D.” tend to stay consistent across different seasons, which means that season 12 had plenty of familiar cast members from season 11. Season 11 was marked by upheaval and changes within the show’s ensemble, but season 12 was relatively quiet and primarily featured returning actors. Jason Beghe continues his long-standing role as Sgt. Hank Voight, a character he has played since the show’s inception.

In the latest season, the departure of Hailey Upton (portrayed by Tracy Spiridakos) has left a significant void, but fear not! A fresh beat cop named Officer Kiana Cook, played by Toya Turner, has been introduced to shake things up. Moreover, a new addition to the cast is Shawn Hatosy as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, joining us in season 12.

Beghe was not the only returning star, and the main cast includes:

Actor Chicago P.D. Role
Jason Beghe Hank Voight
Patrick Flueger Adam Ruzek
LaRoyce Hawkins Kevin Atwater
Amy Morton Trudy Platt
Marina Squerciati Kim Burgess
Benjamin Levy Aguilar Dante Torres
Toya Turner Kiana Cook
Shawn Hatosy Charlie Reid

Chicago P.D. Season 12 Story

What Cases Will The Team Tackle Next?

  • Episode 11 of the season is a crossover episode with Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 11 and Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 11.

In contrast to Chicago P.D.’s weekly case structure, some storylines in Season 12 have longer narrative arcs. One such arc revolves around the character Voight, who grapples with the aftermath of being kidnapped by a serial killer in the previous season. To evade memories of the traumatic event, Voight throws himself into his work relentlessly during the early episodes. His unique approach to justice eventually leads him to devise a daring and potentially lethal strategy to eliminate a corrupt officer within the force, who is unmasked throughout the season.

In this current series, the exit of Upton is followed by introducing a new character to fill her role, which unfolds over time. As a result, a beat cop gradually becomes an integral part of the primary Intelligence narratives, and eventually joins the team during season 12.

How The Chicago P.D. Season 12 Finale Sets Up Season 13

The Season 12 Finale Ties Up Loose Ends That Will Have Lasting Repercussions

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the season finale of Chicago P.D. leaves no doubt about Voight’s determination to eliminate the season’s menacing antagonist, going so far as to arrange for his assassination. However, this ruthless act is bound to have significant and lasting implications for the series, as it becomes increasingly evident that Voight will stop at nothing to safeguard his Intelligence unit – a fact which now includes cold-blooded murder. The question looming over the next season is how this dark decision will impact the dynamics of the team in the episodes to come.

The passing away of the current leader in Chicago’s police department creates an empty position that needs to be filled in the next season. Given the officers’ mistrust towards the last leader, they may not respond positively to the new appointee. Consequently, the upcoming season will require a fresh antagonist for the team as they navigate their weekly cases.

In the final episode of season 12, characters Burgess and Ruzek tie the knot, even if the wedding ceremony isn’t heavily featured. For nearly a decade, their romantic journey has given Chicago P.D a touch of warmth, and with them becoming husband and wife, that emotional depth is expected to persist. As they progress in their marriage, we can anticipate exploring more facets of their personal lives in season 13 of Chicago P.D.
