Even staunch supporters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must acknowledge that they aren’t always right on target with their decisions. A revered institution like the Academy can sometimes commit significant errors. For instance, films such as “Shakespeare in Love” being chosen over “Saving Private Ryan” for Best Picture, the controversial win of “Crash” over “Brokeback Mountain“, and the iconic film “Citizen Kane” receiving only one award are decisions that have left a bitter taste in movie enthusiasts’ mouths.

As a passionate film aficionado, I must admit that while the Academy has made some fantastic choices recently, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” taking the grand prize, it’s undeniable that they still stumble occasionally. Even in years when the Oscars shine, there always seem to be a few ‘villains’ who claim victory. Missteps like awarding beloved actors for roles that miss the mark or handing out technical category awards that leave us scratching our heads are moments that will undoubtedly be remembered as significant oversights in the years to come.

Emilia Pérez (2024)

In a surprising turn of events, Netflix’s Spanish-language crime musical titled “Emilia Pérez” turned out to be this year’s standout film. However, it faced criticism for its portrayal of trans individuals and Mexicans that was considered stereotypical, along with stiff performances, unnatural dialogues, and divisive music. Remarkably, despite significant backlash from fans, the film garnered praise from almost every major awards body, including the Academy.

Following an unexpected setback by actress Karla Sofía Gascón in the Best Picture race for “Emilia Pérez”, the film continued to shine in key categories such as Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña. However, despite being the standout element of “Emilia Pérez”, it’s debatable whether a stellar performance in a subpar movie should be recognized with an Oscar. Indeed, Saldaña triumphed over four other deserving nominees to secure the top award for her portrayal of lawyer Rita Mora Castro.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

In 2023, the movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” made a significant impact at the Oscars. This science fiction comedy set in the multiverse became so popular that it astonishingly won an impressive seven awards. This unprecedented sweep has gained much praise from fans, though it meant that exceptional films like “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Fabelmans” were left without any Oscars.

Despite the fact that even die-hard fans of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” felt let down when Jamie Lee Curtis was named Best Supporting Actress, she delivers a commendable performance as IRS Agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre. However, Curtis’s portrayal falls short of deserving an Oscar in this role. If “Everything Everywhere All at Once” were to win three acting Oscars, one should have been awarded to Stephanie Hsu for her performance as Joy/Jobu Tupaki. While Curtis breathes life into Deirdre as a lively and flamboyant character, Hsu captivates the audience with her portrayal of Jobu, evoking laughter and tears, all while devouring every inch of the scenery. If not Hsu, either Kerry Condon or Angela Bassett would have been equally deserving winners over Curtis.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

In the year that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” reigned supreme at the Oscars, Edward Berger’s adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” was the most formidable contender for the Best Picture title. The film based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel garnered significant recognition, bagging multiple awards at the BAFTAs and an impressive four Oscars. With these four victories, “All Quiet” matched “Parasite” as the most honored non-English film in Oscar history.

In the 2025 Oscars, Volker Bertelmann won Best Original Score for “All Quiet on the Western Front”, but his victory was met with criticism from many fans who felt his score leaned too heavily on loud and booming horns. On the other hand, Justin Hurwitz’s beloved score for “Babylon” failed to win an award, leaving viewers disappointed. Given that Bertelmann’s score for “Conclave” was a strong contender throughout the awards season, it appears he may have more chances to receive accolades for compositions that are less divisive in nature.

The Whale (2022)

Throughout the 2023 Oscar season, the film “The Whale” sparked heated debates among viewers. On one hand, spectators were thrilled to witness Brendan Fraser’s powerful performance, marking a comeback in his career. Conversely, some found the movie’s representation of an overweight gay man to be offensive. Despite its contentious reception, “The Whale” walked away with two prestigious awards at the 2023 Oscars, with Fraser taking home the Best Actor accolade.

Although Brendan Fraser garnered acclaim for his acting in “The Whale”, the movie’s victory in the Makeup & Hairstyling category faced significant criticism. The makeup win was due to transforming Brendan Fraser into a exaggerated representation of an overweight character for the film. While some spectators justify Fraser’s award, arguing that his performance is more than just fatphobia, the same argument doesn’t hold true for the makeup team.

CODA (2021)

The movie “CODA” is truly exceptional. This Apple TV+ Original production radiates emotion and warmth as it narrates the story of Ruby, a hearing girl from a deaf family, who aspires to be a singer. Remarkably, this film emerged unexpectedly to win three Oscars at the 2022 ceremony, surpassing “The Power of the Dog,” which had been considered the favorite for Best Picture.

Although CODA‘s unexpected win garnered much praise, many viewers believe that its uplifting tone doesn’t align with other films in the same category. Unlike movies such as Drive My Car and The Power of the Dog, CODA does not provoke audiences in a similar manner. Interestingly, winning Best Picture may have actually tarnished CODA’s reputation. If it hadn’t been awarded the top prize, it likely would have been remembered fondly as an exceptional film rather than for defeating more fitting Best Picture recipients.

King Richard (2021)

During the 2022 Oscars, CODA’s win was not the only unexpected event. The night became particularly notable when Will Smith, a star in “King Richard,” reacted after Chris Rock made an inappropriate joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Later on, in one of the most awkward scenes ever at the Oscars, Smith himself won the Best Actor award.

Despite the slap incident, many film enthusiasts hadn’t been eagerly anticipating Smith’s Best Actor win for King Richard, as some viewers perceived his performance as a typical biopic role. Instead, nominees like Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power of the Dog and Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick…BOOM! were seen as more likely to deliver a memorable Oscar-winning performance. The slap incident shifted the cultural dialogue away from Smith’s work in King Richard, overshadowing the fact that he wasn’t particularly popular among fans.

The Father (2020)

At the 2021 Oscars, many anticipated that Chadwick Boseman would win the Best Actor award for his extraordinary performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Unfortunately, Boseman had passed away a few months prior, with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom being his last film appearance. However, on that night, Anthony Hopkins unexpectedly took home the Best Actor prize for his equally remarkable work in The Father.

Given the Academy’s high expectations for Boseman to win, they strategically planned to conclude the ceremony with the Best Actor award, an unusual step, in order to pay tribute to the eventual winner. However, when Anthony Hopkins, who was absent from the ceremony, unexpectedly took home the prize, presenter Joaquin Phoenix abruptly ended the show, leading to a rather abrupt and somewhat disappointing end to the event. While Hopkins delivered an outstanding performance in The Father, making him a deserving Oscar winner, the Academy’s bet on Boseman left a sour note on what could have been a celebratory evening for two remarkable performances.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

In a more casual and straightforward way: Bryan Singer’s film, Bohemian Rhapsody, polished up quite well at the 2019 Oscars, taking home four out of its five nominations. However, despite its wins at the Oscars and Golden Globes, many fans considered it as one of the controversial films that unfairly benefited from the awards in 2019.

Some spectators at the Oscars believe that the award for Best Editing given to “Bohemian Rhapsody” was its least deserved victory. The film leans heavily on rapid edits, creating a dizzying effect that could have been less intense. Other nominees in this category, such as “The Favourite,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Vice,” might have offered more intriguing choices for the Best Editing winner.

Green Book (2018)

Following its debut, most discussions about the movie “Green Book” primarily focus on its controversial win for Best Picture. Peter Farrelly’s film explores an unforeseen bond between a black pianist named Don Shirley and his white chauffeur Tony Lip. The movie is often criticized for being overly simplistic, and it bears striking resemblance to another Best Picture winner from past years, “Driving Miss Daisy.

2019 awards season had a less-than-satisfying conclusion with Green Book winning Best Picture. Besides this prestigious award, the movie also received other accolades, such as Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, whose win was well deserved, and Best Original Screenplay, edging out stronger scripts to claim the prize. However, the triumph of Green Book in the Best Picture category feels somewhat unfulfilling, considering the abundance of exceptional films that were released in 2018.

Darkest Hour (2017)

In a turn of fortunate events, Gary Oldman was awarded the coveted Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the film “Darkest Hour.” This veteran actor has proven himself to be exceptionally versatile, earning envy from many in the acting world and warranting an extended period of Oscar victories.

In a different light, Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Churchill was commendable, yet “Darkest Hour” wasn’t his greatest moment on screen. Sadly, Oldman’s award prevented promising younger actors like Timothée Chalamet for “Call Me by Your Name” and Daniel Kaluuya for “Get Out” from receiving their due recognition for more deserving performances. Moreover, granting Oldman for his transformative role set a trend in the Best Actor category to favor biopic roles, leading to several less impressive wins in subsequent award ceremonies as famous actors often secure Oscars for playing well-known figures or undergoing significant character transformations.
