In the upcoming years, the DC Universe is set to incorporate Green Lantern. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote Top Gun: Maverick, has suggested that the franchise’s mishandling of the hero could have been easily rectified. Despite Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns, being featured in James Gunn’s Superman film and Peacemaker season 2 in 2025, the character has been underused for decades in live-action productions. However, the DC animated universe has portrayed the Green Lanterns positively. Unfortunately, iterations of these space cops have been scarce before and after the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds due to various reasons and complications.

Lately, a potential solution to these predicaments has been suggested by Christopher McQuarrie, screenwriter of Top Gun: Maverick and director of Mission: Impossible, during an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. McQuarrie was questioned about his supposed plans for Man of Steel 2 and Green Lantern movies in the old DCEU, to which he disclosed his ideas on how to resolve the live-action problems faced by Green Lantern:

This way, the text maintains its original meaning while being easier to read and understand.

I won’t disclose it, but oh boy, it was incredibly fantastic! Green Lantern was the one who appeared to me. Green Lantern is indeed a tough nut to crack… the power is quite demanding, and I managed to grasp it. It was enjoyable watching him learn how to wield that power and giving that power a weakness, so it wasn’t invincible. The idea of Green Lantern revolves around the ring needing recharging… that’s not an issue, but rather a design feature. Yes, you have infinite power at your disposal, but the battery life is limited and can run out at inopportune moments. That, for me, resolves the Green Lantern dilemma… I came to understand, don’t focus on the costume, concentrate on developing that character instead. And, how do you create tension and stakes for that character?

As per McQuarrie’s perspective, the challenges DC faced with Green Lantern as a character primarily revolved around his visual appearance and the extent of his powers. McQuarrie aimed to tone these aspects down, instead concentrating on instances where the character is grappling with crises, particularly the reality that their powers are not infinite.

What Christopher McQuarrie’s Comments Mean For Green Lantern In Live-Action

The DCU Could Learn From McQuarrie’s View On Green Lantern

Regrettably, Mark McQuarrie’s ideas for Green Lantern might not materialize as planned. His vision, initially proposed for the DCEU film universe, has been overtaken by James Gunn’s DCU since 2025. However, elements of McQuarrie’s suggested approach – focusing more on “tension and stakes” – seem to be influencing the DCU’s upcoming Green Lantern TV series, offering a potential link between his ideas and the new universe.

Based on the information available so far, the upcoming series titled Lanterns appears to be a more intimate exploration of an adventure. Analogies suggest it resembles the style of the series “True Detective”, featuring John Stewart and Hal Jordan delving into a murder case in the heartland of America that is connected to a broad DC Universe mystery. This suggests that the initial Green Lantern-centric story will likely concentrate on character development and the significance of their investigations, rather than grand cosmic events. Whether it aligns with McQuarrie’s comments about limitless power remains uncertain, but indications suggest that the DCU is learning from past missteps in handling these characters.

Our Take On Christopher McQuarrie’s Green Lantern Comments

It Is Refreshing To Have A Big Hollywood Filmmaker Know A Lot About Superheroes

In essence, I find McQuarrie’s insights on Green Lantern truly captivating, and I feel the same way about his thoughts on Man of Steel 2 – a project he proposed to DC alongside his Green Lantern concept. Most notably, these opinions suggest to me that McQuarrie has a deep understanding of DC characters. Consequently, I’m eagerly anticipating potential future collaborations between McQuarrie and the DC Universe. My excitement for the franchise’s future is already high, and I have faith in James Gunn’s ability to create a stunning interconnected world featuring various DC characters. If Gunn manages to recruit filmmakers who share McQuarrie’s passion for these characters, the DC Universe stands to be in excellent hands.
